A double struck 1909S VDB? It has to be from China... What are the chances?

"i found it while cleaning out my grand fathers basement..." (http://cgi.ebay.com/double-struck-cent-/270686698919?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3f062f3da7)

Why would the obverse be struck in a consitant direction (both right side up) while the reverse struck inconsistant? (One of the two strikes being struck "upside down".)

Seems unlikely, but anything is possible I guess. I would not take a chance on this one, if something is too good to be true, it usually is.

That's an excellent observation, and one I should have made - the orientation of the strikes changes on the reverse (from that seen on the obverse), pretty much impossible and a surprisingly foolish blunder by the individual(s) who created it.

It is a Chinese counterfeit. I had this 1909-S V.D.B. in hand and photographed. I have included that picture below.
