How can you tell? I do see what appear's to be deterioation to the east but as far a polishing mark's I see none. Can you explain?
Than's Steven. I am improving on deflecting the light on the coin.

David on those that are difficult to tell if you would take a photo of this one and a photo of an 88, draw a vertical line from the right side of the upper curve of the letter G south through the G you should be able to see the difference unless you run across one that is severly abraided/deteriorated. The upper curve of the 89 should be further to the west than that of the 88. That is one way of telling and one I use when searching.
Hope I didn't confuse you like I think I did myself here.:squigglemouth:

Thanks Steven. I am getting better at Photoshop but I'm not there yet. Thank's for the explanation.

David,
I think you can see the differences in the G's on this photo (http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/album.php?albumid=59&pictureid=583) pretty well for the RDV-005 and RDV-006. Mainly the upper curve when it comes to abraided/deteriorated dies.

You are correct. I knew this before I posted this thread. I didn't check the resources I had. The G is slightly rotated and futher East. I was looking for abrasion instead of postition. Thank you for the updated pictures. By the way, i'm still looking for the 88 D. I hope it's in my pile of Cent's.

I am the least expert on this matter but... Every 88 I put under the scope, if you measure the outside height and width of the G, it is taller than it is wide.
By contrast, the outside width and height of the G for 89 are quite equal.
I think that is true also of the photos of RDV 5 and 6 posted earlier in this thread.
If I am right, I think its an easier and more accurate way of distinguishing regardless of die wear.
Any comments from our more experienced members?

Good observation- only difficulty I foresee is how people will measure those distances if they don't have a good camera / microscope / scanner.
