I've been going through the 10,000+ Canadian cents I've acquired during the course of my Lincoln hunting, and found this apparently rather common anomaly. I think it's abrasion doubling but it's really quite strong in appearance. Here are two of the 7 or 8 examples I've found so far.

Very impressive AG, I agree that it is abrasion doubling. Have fun with the 10,000 lincolns.

There are a few varieties that sell well on eBay- for example, there's a 1985 "pointed 5" that carries a significant premium. I don't remember the rest off-hand but if you have some to search through I could make a list for you.

Is there a reference guide for Canada varieties?

Is there a reference guide for Canada varieties?

I don't know much about any books that might be out there, but this dealer's website describes many of the varieties:

Also, here's a cointalk thread about the subject:

10,000 canadian? WOW~!~!

Yeah, living in Maine means one in every 90 or so cents I get is Canadian- it adds up after a while!

yea i'm in California, not as much, maybe 2-5 for every $25. I thought I had a lot with almost a full roll. :LOL_Hair:

I'm nuts enough to have my brother ship me bank bags fron Nevada. (As far as I can tell they don't exist in Florida. Or do they?) Anyway, I get about 7 to 10 of them from a bag. Today I found a near mint 1967 centennial. Have not had a chance to research it yet. Do they have any value? George

If I remember correctly, the Royal Canadian Mint use chrome plated dies to extend their life. This doubling seen is when the chrome plating has fallen off. Ken Potter is the one to see about this coin.

There is a market for Canada change but I have not really seen one for Doubled Dies and errors.

This is die deterioration doubling. Abrasion doubling is largely (and perhaps entirely) a myth.

I find this site very handy for Canadian coins. Not only is it a price guide, if you click on the dates on the variety coins, many will give detailed info and pictures of them (note: you need to scoll down to see the pics.)

http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

For example, clicking on "1979 double 979" cent date, the following appears at the bottom of the page:
