Does anyone have any problems with the appearence of these coins as it pertains to 'color' or 'cleaning'?

I think your more obvious question is about the seller, Great Southern Coin.

I won't bash the seller, but I've had 2 different friends return coins- cents and dimes to them because the coins were obviously altered. Masterfully done, but cleaned and re-toned nonetheless.

Think about it from another perspective- This seller is constantly selling $500-6,000 coins, ALL RAW. In that price range, one should really consider a third party grading opinion.

I'm not saying they don't handle the occasional problem free coin, but I'll bet you Wheats to Morgans, you'll have a tough time getting this seller's coins slabbed.

Those are nice looking coins... But then again with the modern photoshop colors can be deceiving!!!

Pictures can be misleading. I know that for a fact because I do manipulate photos for the sites that I have. Since the coins that I picture are not for sale, then I feel this is all right to do. However, there are people who doctor the pictures to enhance the quality of that particular coin when selling coins. That is not correct and should be avoided.

So, having said that, when I see quality coins, such as you have posted, I do not render a decision on that quality that they are supposed to be.

I have had suspicions about that operation, for the reasons noted by Chris and BJ. I had a bad experience with a similar seller (beautiful photos) where the eventual coins were clearly altered and expertly retoned. Such coins should be in a TPG holder or bought in person at show of some sort.

I have never felt comfortable buying from them. So I have never seen one of their coins in person.

A reasonable person would think that if a coin is in a TPG holder that can be verified seperately one could command a premium for their sales... IMHO!!!

Light Cleaning, AkA, Acetone, in my book, is OK..and, most dealers use it on coins before submitting to a TPG(warning: tiny hairlines WILL occur if you even use the lightest touch and the ole cotton swab technique..especially on high grade, PL surface cents...best left alone!)...Careful cleaning/conservation of a rare coin can save it from an early environmental death, and, is useful in many cases to remove corrosion that could eat away at the base metal over time, ruining the value.
Anyway, I am unfamiliar with "Retoning", and, "Recoloring" of copper coins...I'm sure it is somewhat easy to learn how to do, and, is done on a regular basis on coins NOT going to a TPG.....I have never seen a good article , with pics showing side-by-side, recolored copper coins, VS. natural toning/aging, and, look foward to some expert writing one, (any links, feel free to let us know?)so we can all learn more about this unsavory aspect of collecting.

It doesn't make a difference if you or me or a dealer cleans a coin we will take away from the value and third party graders will body bag it or put improperly cleaned. The only way around this is to have the raw coin sent to the graders and have them conserve(cost a lot more) the coin. I have had ngc conserve a coin and it came back as a ms-65 with no indications that it had been conserved, cleaned or improperly cleaned just a ms-65. Richard

i think there are some buyers that purchase just because it's "pretty". the not so well informed will stash these in their collection and keepum from now on. i won't deal with these people but if you like it, go for it.
