So this eBay AUCTION (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280689574444) went up claiming to be a die 004. I think it is a die 005 MDS, but I could be wrong. The photos in the auction are from an auction that closed on Sunday (maybe this seller was the buyer in the previous auction?). Emailed the seller and waiting for a response...

How would one identify die #4 as opposed to die #5. I have seen copies with markers for #4 but what would possibly make this #5. I would like to know, seriously.

For only 2200 bucks it's well worth it for either one! Right.

yes Jason, your dead on! It is NOT die #4. It is #5. i have almost 2 complete sets of the 72, except the elusive #4. The kicker in this is as you know is the die stage and markers, NONE of his match anything on#4. but match up 5. Plus look at liberty if you see enough of these its a dead giveaway. I did see this one on ebay, i shook my head and kept scrolling. Also if you read into the listing i believe the seller knows it #5 not #4

I am currently working on my 3rd set and this auction is NOT the Die #4.

I'll round it up and say it is not die #4.
This coin has none of the markers of the 1972 #4.
There's a sucker born everyday...in this case...who's the sucker?

Die #4 Marker for the reverse of all Wexler Stages "A thru G" have the marks below and through the "N" of United. The scratches get lighter on the reverse die as it progresses to Stage "G". Hope this helps!!!!

Here is a link to help out with the 3 Stages (A, B, C) of the Obverse Die #4.

Die Variety News Magazine Issue #16 Sept 2010 also addresses the Stages of the
1972 DDO #4.

I thought i saw it on this site or maybe another site along time ago where some found a reverse of the #4 but a non-doubled front. If my memory is right it said discovery piece, attributed by anacs. Am i correct? And has anyone else ever seen this, or even own one?

I have in my collection: 1972 DDO Die #4 Stage "A" (EDS, No Rim Cuds) and Stage "C", (Multiple Rim Cuds by Liberty)

I am Missing Stage "B", (One Small rim cud next to "Liberty")

I have the following Discovery Pieces (Stages "E", "F", & "G"). (See last 3 ANACS coins below)

I also have the Stage "D" (Currently at ANACS being graded and encapsulated and the coin was recently found by Billy Crawford) which is the Non-Doubled Die Obverse mated with the Die #4 Reverse.

Hey Joe- can you give me an idea of approximate premiums for the reverse dies? That's a very cool set. I have a client who's got 2 examples of the reverse die, trying to figure out what kind of market there is for the coin. I know it's rare, but it's collectors are relatively scarce themselves. Do you mind saying what you paid for your examples? (even ball park figures are helpful). Thanks!
