See, this is the part of grading that always gets me stumped. I would never have put a grade of 62 on that.

I agree Rock! Thats Way Too Mushy To Get An MS62 From Me, But I Realize These Older Branch Mints Had These Issue's, Lots To Learn!:tinysmile_eyebrow_t That's An Ugly Set Of Dies!:LOL_Hair:

I am not so sure about it just being the dies as much as being a combination problem with the planchet it is struck on also. I would be interested in the weight of the planchet and a closer look at the surface. Otherwise I do agree it is an ugly coin and IMO overgraded.

Goodness...from the photos it sure does look bad, maybe it has more charm in person...but I am not spending $150-200 to find out...

C'mon! This is exactly why I love PCGS- They're technical graders on wheats- I buy coins that look just like this- as AU from dealers frequently. One of the secrets is to see the coin's luster- if it's not broken at the high points (cheek, beard and coat) then the coin will grade MS. That's the majority of my MS Wheat set- even key dates- I have a 1922-D that I paid $27 for as an EF (weak strike). When I slabbed it, the coin graded the MS62 Brown coin I was expecting. They're not gorgeous coins, but when you can pick them up raw as circulated examples, there's NO downside!

I agree with Chris. If that is the way the coin looked after it left the mint, then it should be graded Mint State. I believe that the grading companies should give a technical grade, and the collector should determine what it is worth based on strike and eye appeal.

I agree with Brad. In my early days of collecting and before TPG, it was all about strike and eye appeal. thats what you paid for. A technical grade is and can be helpful but should not be the sole determining factor when aquiring a coin. I have chosen many a EF wheats over MS for my personal collection in the past mostly due to strike and eye appeal.

Very nice coin shameless! As far as I am concerned your coin was much more deserving of its grade.

Ya now - the coin really looks like a heavy greased filled die. I pass on all of these, graded or not!
