Recently, Joe, (1sgret) sent me a 1961Proof cent to attribute as a possible doubled die. Unfortunately, the coin was not a new discovery as I originally thought, and did have some Master Die Doubling on it. That was the sad news. The good news is that while performing my examination, it was discovered that this coin is a trails die. So far, it is the earliest known. Congrats Joe! Sometimes another set of eyes can see other things that may have been missed. A photo of that coin is below. This caused me to look through some proof coins that I had, and I found 3 different 1964 Proof trails dies. I also found a minor 2007P Thomas Jefferson dollar with a minor trails die. All of these coins will soon be included on BJ Neff's site http://www.traildies.com

How would this find effect any theories to the cause of the trails. Just curious.

Steven,
BJ and I have been discussing this very question. Although most of the trails dies found have been since the single squeeze method was instituted, there have been more and more found from before then. We believe that this could still happen during one of the hubbings during the multiple hubbing era. We pretty much know that there is some sort of slippage that occurs during the hubbing(s). That doesn't change. We now need to keep an eye out for these is all years since 1959. Maybe we can get lucky and find one on an old wheatie.
Al this does is show that there is a problem inherent to the hubbing process...whether it was a multiple hubbing, or single squeeze.
