What do we think of this Lincoln...is it a '92 CAM?

1992 CLOSE AM with a unique strike (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1992-CLOSE-AM-unique-strike-/280729356924?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item415cc60a7c)

It was struck thru grease (on the obverse).

Weight checks out reducing the likelihood of it being a magic coin - it sort of looks cleaned, maybe with soap or something. Seller wants to pay for shipping to PCGS - the fact the seller has not done this seems to indicate an issue. Might get a genuine holder. And errors and varieties do not usually mix well on the same coin.

Is it worth $5k? I do not think so, what about anyone else?

I would love to have it but not at that price

What's odd to me is the following statements- "This is Truly a one of a kind coin!! This coin will truly create a lot of frenzy in the coin world!!!! For all you cherry pickers and one of a kind coin lover do not miss out on this one." Seems like he REALLY wants to get rid of it.

No serious collector would ever state that there coin is "truly one of a kind," because, as we all know, there very well could be more out there. If I were selling a $5,000 coin, I'd be darn sure to get it certified first. It's such a frivolty compared to what the coin is supposedly worth. Who sells $5,000 coin in the raw??

I Pm'd the seller giving them some advice. I would at least send it to Wexler/Crawford/Wiles/Potter to attribute and document if one was inhibited about using a TPG or before sending to a TPG.

And I agree, the "one of kind" label is wrong and will not sit well with seasoned collectors - especially ones with deep pockets.

It is a bit pricey and I have a feeling that it will not sell. If the bidding had started at 2K, then there would have been a chance. As to the obverse, it almost appears to be struck through cloth, but then again, the pictures leave a lot of questions.

Coins that are Varieties and also have an error on them are known as "White Elephants". I would not put much stalk in this listing unless it was attributed or certified.

I can't really see that well. I'm using my phone to view them. From what I see I can't be sure it's not a 93'. Seller knows something though. First thing I did when I found the three I found (after freaking out) was get it to pcgs or ngc.

I was going to say that in my previous post however my eyesight is not that good. IMO it does look funny on the last digit and does not really look like a "2". :tinysmile_hmm_t: I may be wrong!!!!:tinysmile_classes_t

Though I can't be 100% certain, but from what I see in the full coin obverse image is it appears to me to be a 1993 obverse and not a 1992. The lettering, especially the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is much thinner as compared to much thicker letters that are normal on a '92 obverse. Just my observation.

I should have spent more time on the obverse - that's it - it's a 1993!!!!!!!!!!!!

And that ship sinks...

Yep, another dead give-away is the chin. Note that the chin on the coin for auction is of the '93 style while the chin on a '92 obverse is of a totally different design that exhibits additional beard strands.

I was also thinking that the shape of the top of last digit looked a bit suspicious. I'm with you. 1993 it is!

And at the beginning of the thread I was thinking I would be the first to notice that the obverse die was not a 92! Yepper. Genuine CAM, but on a 1993 instead of a 1992. That should make a couple thousand dollar difference:bigsmile:

I sent a message to the seller of the auction and below is the reply quoted:

"this is not a 93 it is a 92.i use my 20x21mm loupe with a built in led light to see the number 2.I also use a high power led flash light too.the reason why the lettering looks thin is because it just did not stamp all the way through is my guess.I will refund every thing back if this is not a 92 close AM.read my statement and bid with confidence."

When I sell or buy a coin with a high value like that I use a intermediate to verify reception of the coin and funds. Even when the coin is graded. I use a trusted well known consignment.

My first impression of the date was a 97 not a 92... Glad you all were on the ball!!!

Poor guy doesn't realize that we use other things besides the date to prove that this isn't a 1992. When the bust is the incorrect style for the date, you know it is a different date than you assumed!

With such an asking price, I would agree with everyone to have it authenticated

This is one of the reasons why we love it here at LCR.
You guys get together with your knowledge and see things some of us don't. Some of you knew something was wrong from the start, that got the ball rolling.
JC you had a "hunch" that something wasn't right.
Kudos to you Billy for some great detective work Billy!
