View Full Version : 1988 d ddo?
Not sure if this is doubled. Looks like the 88 has some separation or is it die wear. It's also struck with the defective punch, formerly 1mm-016 at coppercoins.

I see the thickness you are talking about. I just can't tell for sure.

Not really sure but it has the possibility of being a NEW DISCOVERY.

i think we may have something here...i thought i found a ddo too. the reverse looks crazy i have never seen anything like it. the outer rim of the coin around the outside of the letters is a mirror finish the rest of the coin is satin finish and there's trails everywhere, i think they are trails i don't know.

The best I can see is that much of the field of the reverse has a lot of die scratches. Not sure what I see about the AM of America could be trails but more likely gouges????

the best trails are coming off LIBERTY. what causes those trails?

Looks like a DDO to me- the "1" looks notched on the lower left corner, and the 988 look like there are weak separation lines too. Nice find!

Jeremy,
Overall, you have a nice looking zinc cent there. It is difficult to find the 80's without a lot of bubbling and other problems.
I have seen many MM's on these post copper coins and find a great deal of them like yours are just a matter of the die hitting the coin hard enough to break the copper shell and expose the zinc core. This action often pushes the metal away from the device, i.e., the mint mark, and causes what appears to be doubling. The zinc core will corrode easily and what remains will not be a good collectible coin. It is a shame that zincolns are so fragile as they have become a collectors nightmare of not being able to obtain and maintain a nice collection.
We need someone to invent a way to keep the zinc from ruining the entire coin.
Some sort of surface treatment?
However, the eight does look like it has a nice spread. This is one area of collecting that I am still trying to figure out, so someone else needs to make the call on it.
Still a nice 88 D!!
