if they are average circulated coins an easy way to tell what kind of 1982 cent you have is to flick the coin in the air. a copper coin will have a ring to it. a zinc coin sounds dull and flat.
they also have coin scales too. you need one that measures in grains or at least in grams.

I use the same digital scale that i measure my black powder with. It came with a calibration weight.

the way i tell is by the drop test just like 1gtsfan said
i listen for the ring which is copper and the dull sound is for the zinc
mostly i can tell just the looks - good luck

I use a common drinking straw with a slit in each end as a balance. A push-pin or paper-clip for the fulcrum in the center of the straw works well. A known zinc cent on the left and the cent to be tested on the right. If the right side of the balance goes down quickly it's copper. If it stays level it's zinc. Cheap, simple, accurate and effective. No batteries required.

It's not elaborate. I took a couple photos but now my Rochester(Kodak) camera batteries died. They're recharging now. I'll post later.

Here it is. I told you it's not very impressive, but functional. Hold it at the fulcrum and let the coins decide if one is heavier.

Nice setup David. I use some digi scales i got off ebay for like 13.00 shipped. Most i can tell, but every now and then a 83 makes me double check.

I got to where I check every 83. When I run across one I set it aside until I have a bunch to weigh ,then I throw them on the scale (one at a time) to check their weights. That's how B. Crawford found his and it surprised him. He recalibrated his scales and weighed it again to be sure". It's one very expensive coin if you can locate one.

Maybe someday she'll realize how silly I look using it and get me a digi-scale for my birthday.

The Book "Strike it Rich with Pocket Change" by Potter and Allen has a detailed article on the coin on page 64. If I remember correctly only 4-6 examples have been found of this Transitional Piece. Coin World ran an article and I think on the CONECA site deep inside the articles there is a story there also. That's all the info I have unless someone else can add too it. Joe P.S. Try www.Koinpro.com (http://www.Koinpro.com) web site on articles also.

it also mentions about 89D & 90D cent cents being made of copper instead of zinc

Thanks for the Link. I knew about the 89D & 90D but usually I don't check them unless the color is off. Joe

What I do is put a copper cent on the viewing side of one of those cardboard paper holders (with the view plastic in it), then I put the 1982 in question in the other clear area, and put it on a pencil along the crease. The heavier cent will win and tip the inexpensive scale, and tell which is copper and which clad. Instant scale, cheapo.

Now how could that of happened? It would be nice to find one.

Some coin enthusiasts say they can tell by the color and thickness of the coin when they handle them. My old eyes are not that keen anymore so I weigh all 1983's.
Metal transitional are usually wrong planchets wedged into the crevasses of a tote bin.

OK..been checkin 83s all night and i can almost tell by holding it that its thinner and light..
Heres something funny..I made one of these straw scales..THEY WORK GREAT!!!..but thats not thwe funny part. I went thru and separated all the 83s from the rest and started my weighing, then all of a sudden the straw evens out, my heart starts pounding!!! I take the coin off and it was an 82 that slipped by me!!!..lololol
BUT THE STRAWS WORK GREAT!!!!!
