Hi, I'll guess, if you didn't get those out of a roll yourself, the clerk who broke that roll open was not to pleased about shorting her cash register:|, Without seeing the edge, I would have thought they were washer's. Are they worth collecting or just novelty?

Yeah Frank, I'm just interested how and where you got them ?

I bought a few these myself just out of curiosity; they are odd. People collect them, but to a degree, they really could just be viewed as PSD couldn't they?

Thanks for sharing Frank.

Thats a good question. PSD. I guess you could say that but it was the mint that did it. So would that still be PSD? I would think anything out side the mint is PSD. This is a good question for Bob or Mike.
I didn't get them from the bank.I pick them up on ebay.

I've never heard of anyone finding these in a roll, so my question is: where do they come from? Does the mint sell them, or are mint employees smuggling them and making money on them?

I'm not sure if the mint gift shop sells them or not. I really don't know where or how people get them.

I would have to agree with Jason....Post Strike Damage would be anything after the strike. But still not a garage job and a good learning tool.

This is where definitions get technical. It is technically PSD but not technically PMD. Post-strike means after the actual strike. Post-Mint means after it left the Mint. So it is PSD but not PMD. But then, they have generally been collectable as novelties.

I would imagine that some detail of the design can still be seen. My understanding of waffled coins is that they were used to cancel damaged/error coins and the mint would have no reason to cancel blanks.

That was my understanding too Jody....I had to go back and look at the pics then change my post....but I think you are right...there must be some remnant of a strike.

There is no marks of a strike. I bought these on ebay. I thought they were state quarters but maybe I'm wrong. Here is what the auction said.

I guess you're right about not being struck, as I definitely can't see anything. I wondered why they were waffled then? The blank was cut the wrong shape? You would think that there would be no motivation to waffle a blank round piece of metal. Strange. I just hope now that these were waffled by the Mint and not some outside job.

In my understanding of the minting process:

The planchets are being outsourced under contract for the mint..

If during the CQ inspection of incoming planchets it is found do not meet the quality standards set by the contract, then the planchets in question are waffeled and sent back to be recycled by the vendor. So you may have some that were struck and some that remain as planchets.

Thanks Joe. I had only heard of error coins and damaged coins being waffled.

I can't remember where, but I think I recently read an article about these being counterfeited. It would probably be ridiculously easy to do. I still haven't heard anyone say how so many of these make it out of the mint.

Why would some one make counterfeited waffle coins, they not worth allot. It would be pretty expensive to make a device to smash or shape a waffle coin like the mint does. I would think a counterfeited waffle would be at lease struck with some kind of a obv and rev.

My guess is that it would be easy, and of course they're probably just using cheap metal rounds. They're not worth much, but if you could sell thousands of them for 4-5 bucks apiece, that adds up.
