With the shelf-like appearance on the inside curl of th "6" I would have to say machine doubling damage.

Dude.. I have rolls and rolls of the super thick 1960's.. It seems 1960 - 1964 had like a super bold die font thing going on..

I believe the issue with the 6 in the date may be a master die issue. I believe you will see that on a lot of the 60's.

I agree with Steven. I have noticed this too. Seems to be a design issue.

I believe that just about all the 1960 small dates are like that. We have to remember that the last two digits were placed into the master die (which was made from the previous year's master hub with that date removed). This pratice of using the last years master hub to make a new master die for the next year was used well into the 1890's, until they statrted making a new galvano for each yera. Any slight rotation of the punch could have caused that small extra that is seen on the 6 digit.
