View Full Version : What causes this? Bulging on the second memorial column

I know this isn't much of a find but I just have to find out why this particular area seems to have this error over many different years. Is this an inherent weakness in the dies? I find a lot of these things and am sure they are not worth any premium but just curious why it happens. Last night I went through 100 or so 2005 P and D's and found over 10 of them.

Thanks.

That is from an over polishing to cover a clash. The Y in LIBERTY show in that area. The harder they try to remove that clash the die abrades more from agressive polishing. When the field is lowered the devices crisp edges of the field and device area looses it sharpness. Creating a bulge from the field and sometimes distorts the column/columns.

Thanks coop for the info. I take it with all of the coins I find with this type of pattern on them that this area gets a ton of clashes. I see the same types of bulging over many different years. I take it that these are so common they are not worth keeping.

Sometimes in the same bay a chipping can occur that makes what is called a bee hive appear. I was searching a couple of rolls of 2008-P cents and noticed a die progression going on with the result of a large die chip on it. So I made a GIF of it show the progression.

That might be polishing, though I don't see any file marks. Rather common, especially on '82-84 reverses where the columns almost disappear at times. I wouldn't rule out a die dent or maybe a plating issue confined to one area. Not collectible whatever it is.

I've been working with the same version of Photoshop for the last 15 years. And I'm still learning.
