Found this oddity in my searching.
Any chance this could be getting close to a DDO?
More pictures in my file if you need them.

I had to have a giggle when I read 'is this coin was getting close' to being a DDO. I'm afraid not Jean, but it is a nice looking coin anyway.

Thanks again Bob.
Glad I could cause you to smile.
By the way, I cannot find anything in all my reference books about how this type of anomaly happens... can you shed some simple light on it?
Frankly, it reminds me of a baby's droopy drawers.

JeanK - I believe you are talking about the uneven appearance of the letter thickness, where the top is thinner looking than the bottom. The most common cause for this is die polishing. The thinner part of the letter has been polished more, leaving less of a recess in the die face. So what you have is less area for the metal to flow into giving the letter a tapered look.

Yep, BJ, yet another question that you answered in terms I can understand.
Just telling me it is 'die deterioration' when the coin looks so nice still makes me want to say 'why'.
I do have many books I have been able to purchase over the past two years of coin collecting, but could not find an example of this in any of them.
You and all the 'good guys' here are of immeasurable assistance in my learning processes for this endeavor.
Thank You!
