I found a 1998 Wide AM in my collection, trying to decide what degree of MS it really is. Basically, how can I tell if it's red versus red/brown? Then, at what point is it worth it to have it certified?
Looks red to me. But probably MS 63 or MS 64. Certification by ANACS is probably the same cost as the coin itself. It is really up to you.

By your pix it looks like it was cleaned with something or more like scrubbed. Looks red tho.

I would go with MS-63 RD. Also Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll keep looking for more, maybe I'll find several and make it worth the cost to cert.

Your in the right area as I am about 125 miles north of you in NC and I have found over 71 at last count. Don't forget there is a 2000 Wide AM also.

That's good to know. I'm looking thru my causal coins now, not only the 2000 but the 99's too.

if you find the 99 and it is in good shape, that would be one you may consider getting certified. 98 and 00 i probably wouldn't bother. oh yea WELCOME!

Thanks. I just went thru my casual coins and all I found was the one 98, no 99's or 2000's. Guess I'll sit on this one and hope to find some others in the future.

Keep them in mind there are several with wrong reverses. Brad has provided this information: http://www.lincolncentresource.com/wideams.html This should help you out.

IMO, these are a bit tricky to grade without having the coin in hand and I don't usually agree with the grades most people (including TPG's) assign to them. The design of modern Memorials is very good at protecting the surface. Perhaps I tend to grade them harshly, but I do so realistically. If you examine the AU grade for Wheat cents, normally the slightest rub to the cheek justifies an AU grade. In a similar fashion, I believe the slightest rub to the side of the forhead is AU on Memorials.
Look closely at the forehead and cheek, mostly the side of the forhead. Also look closely at the reverse pillars and steps. If you see any rubs or excessive hits, IMO, the coin is AU red. Without better pictures, the best I could say is the coin is between AU and MS62, definately not better than MS63.
I would go with 62/63.

I would grade your coin around a MS 61 to 62the fields look like they have some oxidation spots on the obverse as well as the reverse, and that is very critical, when it comes to grading the coin, and that will take the grade down there seems to be no wear, but the fields are not that great Still a great find indeed
