Hi All,
Today I went through most of my local dealer's proof set holdings, and found three nice varieties:
1957 Set with a Jefferson nickel quadrupled die obverse, Cherrypickers' Guide number FS-035.8 aka 05-1957-101
1963 Set with a Roosevelt dime doubled die reverse, Cherrypickers' Guide number FS-018 aka 10-1963-803 (not the Red Book listing)
and a 1962 set with one of the DDO cents (I believe coppercoins #3 though I can't match up die markers)
Now, I'm keeping the 1962 but thought that I might sell the other two, however- I haven't sold proof set varieties before and am looking for advice. Briefly, I see two options-
1) Keep the set intact, and sell the entire thing but highlight the variety
2) Send the variety out to get authenticated and just sell that
Cons for #1 is that it's difficult to take good pictures through the wrapper, and also I'm essentially "giving away" the other coins in the set; Pros are that it keeps the original packaging intact and maybe that's worth a premium
Cons for #2 are the cost of authentication and cutting up the proof set; Pros are the third-party authentication and keeping the remaining coins
Any opinions are appreciated!
I've attached sample images of the 1957 QDO nickel:
