Hi All,
Today I went through most of my local dealer's proof set holdings, and found three nice varieties:

1957 Set with a Jefferson nickel quadrupled die obverse, Cherrypickers' Guide number FS-035.8 aka 05-1957-101

1963 Set with a Roosevelt dime doubled die reverse, Cherrypickers' Guide number FS-018 aka 10-1963-803 (not the Red Book listing)

and a 1962 set with one of the DDO cents (I believe coppercoins #3 though I can't match up die markers)

Now, I'm keeping the 1962 but thought that I might sell the other two, however- I haven't sold proof set varieties before and am looking for advice. Briefly, I see two options-

1) Keep the set intact, and sell the entire thing but highlight the variety
2) Send the variety out to get authenticated and just sell that

Cons for #1 is that it's difficult to take good pictures through the wrapper, and also I'm essentially "giving away" the other coins in the set; Pros are that it keeps the original packaging intact and maybe that's worth a premium

Cons for #2 are the cost of authentication and cutting up the proof set; Pros are the third-party authentication and keeping the remaining coins

Any opinions are appreciated!

I've attached sample images of the 1957 QDO nickel:

1st - Consider the value of the variety vs effective cost to attribute and slab including S/H/I both ways.

2nd - Most buyers of varieties care less about the other coins in the proof sets, unless the person is into variety proof sets intact, as they know dealers want a premium for the intact set to make there money back.

If it were my option I would take out the Varieties, photograph them, put in a flip with a coin slip and put them on E-bay.
Break down the other proofs and keep what you want and sell the rest on E-bay.
Just a thought to make your money back. However see what the proof single and sets are bringing without the varieties on E-bay lst. You then can gauge if you will make your money back off the singles.

Take them out. If you found a nice variety, chances are it worht more then what you paid for the set!. Sell the variety. I just found a DDO Franklin in my 1957 and can only match it with the description on CONECA. DDO-001. Dont know anything else about it.

BUT. I cut it out cuz I only paid around $12 for the whole set in an unopened envelope.

Hi:
I agree with Joe - use e-Bay. If real rare have the coin slabbed.
Thanks
