Here's another strange one in my collection that I have had for many years.

It's a 1942-D Lincoln cent. Any thoughts?

Regards,
Billy

regardless of the cause, that is one cool looking coin. Do you have an image of the whole obverse?

MY THOUGHTS: I had a early LMC that was like that however the Liberty was all the way above the other one and IGWT was also doubled and the reverse had two EPU's.

I sent the coin to MD and he told me someone had attempted to use another set of "Soft Dies" Post Mint to make a second set of designs to pass it off as a double struck coin.

There was an error dealer in the 1970's who supposedly had a catalog/reference book out that almost everything listed and pictured was fake error/variety coins. I can't recall the author's name. That's all I can remember for now.

I would have to agree. This coin is probably "False Dies" struck.

BTW -- it was in a PCI (golden type) slab annotated as "Double Liberty" and "Broken Die" on the insert!!!! LOL!!!!

That's pretty good to have a grading company authenticate a (Fake) Error. It's not the first time and won't be the last.
That is a Keeper for Sure!!!!!!!!!:LOL_Hair:

One good thing out of this -- it's in my possession and permanently off-the-market so nobody else can get burned.

Good thing there are experts like you two out there looking out for the rest of us. That would have fooled me. Still really cool looking.

Billy,

Had this not been a error, what class would this type fall under. It does appear that the letter's in Liberty are almost full CW. Would that be the first sign of a fake? It is very interesting but how did you know?

It would have been something on the line of a massive Class V Pivoted combined with a massive Class VIII Tilted hub doubling.

... but how did you know?It was in a PCI holder.

False die was what I was thinking when I first saw it...so I agree with the crowd.

One would guess that a PCI holder = a colender holding water vs. a pot. Thank's Billy

There are more than a few false dies out there. One of the most blatant user of false dies was a dealer on E-bay, some Indian Chief if I remembered correctly, who tied himself into the ANA as some big wig. Just about every week or so, he would put some false dies on, mostly on the reverse dies of state quarters.

I did another track of one E-bay dealer who claimed they didn't know how the doublings occurred or what kind of error they were or if they were real or not and yet he or she collected over $1000.00 on auctions for the effort.

If you are unsure of the error or variety, you are definitely in one of the right places to be to find out if it is legitimate or not.

Billy - one question. Can you see where the false die impacted the original letters in LIBERTY?
