Errors and varieties suck you in BadThad. It's like an addiction! It all started with large/small dates for me and then just exploded to DDO/DDR's, RPM's, trails, mint errors, large and small mint marks, strike thru's....... the list goes on.

I have my share, but they don't excite me as much as the general collecting of the series.

Hi:
I still am a regular Lincoln collector at heart - but the errors add another dimension to collecting and searching. It has also been profitable.
But I still like to look at my au-55 09svdb! and be gratefull that We have one.
Thanks

Just like everyone else said Thad... we swallowed hook line and sinker and have not been the same since.
I am still improving my wheat and memorial special collection as the opportunity presents itself. Just yesterday I found the nicest 1992P bu cent I have ever seen.
So nice that I could not bear to see it damaged so I am keeping it in an Intercept 2X2.

Ahhhh....another Memorial collector! :) Most people laugh at me for being so into the Memorial series. It's extremely difficult to locate quality pieces with EDS. People think you can just go and buy a BU roll set and be done....well....I say NOT. The vast majority of BU Memorials are MS-63 and lower with MDS to LDS.
My goal is to have all of them in MS-65 up with EDS. This is a VERY challenging task!

That will be a challenge. (A NICE ONE and something Really Kool to brag about).
MY CURRENT ENDEAVORS:
I also work on Proofs and currently have a run from 1969-S thru 2008-S all in PCGS holders all are Proof 68/69 DCAM's including my Type I and Type II (1979 - 1981-S)..
I also collect Lincoln Keys and Semi-Keys.
I am working on my Wheats 1938 P,D,S thru 1959 all in MS-66 RD (10 more to go)..
I collect Varieties (Mostly LMC) and Major and Minor Errors from IHC - thru Silver Dollars.
I collect Buffalo's, Jefferson's, in high grades..... Key dates in Roosevelt dimes,..Key dates in Washington 25C, Proof, Platinum and Gold, Some Ancient coins including gold and errors.
Old Foreign Currency or out of Print Foreign Currency (N. Korea, etc).
Last of all I have an extensive collection of A-Rod Baseball Cards and autographs. :tinysmile_hmm_t:
So you see I'm not just into varieties/Errors/Wrong Reverses or Transitionals (Even though they are my main focus 98% of the time along with searching rolls).
I hope I didn't leave anything out and I feel right at home here among the other collectors of RPM's, Old Lincoln Key dates, etc.
I enjoy everyone else's passions also so throw the pictures up so I can enjoy them.:)

Just looked through your albums....very impressive! Your WAM and CAM collection is amazing. I've almost given up hope of ever finding the 92D CAM, it's one of the most frustrating coins for the bank roll searcher IMO. In fact, I've only found one WAM (1998) and that's it.....and I've looked in more than a few boxes. LOL I can't even find a 2000 WAM, even though there's plenty out there.

Thank You for your nice comments on my albums and I am still looking for the 92-P CAM and now the 96-P WAM to complete my collection until I find something different or someone else does.
The 98's and 2000's are drying up by everyone pulling them out of circulation. It's been awhile since I have found any. I go thru about 2-4 boxes or 2 bags a week but have slowed down due to the Forum keeping me busy looking at the posts and viewing albums of the members. Good Luck Searching and posting your finds. Joe's collection is indeed a nice rounded collection of denominations that he chose's to collect. I agree that he shoud post what he need's to post what what he needs to fill his entire collection. I do have a shop up the road.

I like other series ,and not just the lincoln cents . I do like error coins out of everything I collect they are interesting to me I love the excitment of going through rolls of coins, and maybe finding something of value and interest.
I have a passion for toned coins in all the series ,and error coins in the kennedy half dollar Eisenhower dollar forigen coins etc etc. I don't limit my self to one area of collecting ,because i like to have knowledge about other areas of numismatics the more you know about the hobby the better off you are that's my main reason why i don't like to limit myself in this wonderful endless learning hobby.

BadThad:
I started collecting Lincolns when I was a kid in 1982. I was thrilled with the all the different varieties that year. I collected what I could find for a long time never really paying any interest to errors or varieties (like DDOs or RPMs). But eventually I got hooked, nevertheless I haven’t forgotten everyday Lincoln collecting. My best memorials have often come from mint-sets, but I have to admit the 80s and 90s are just tough in general to find really good examples anywhere.
My primary BU Lincoln collection runs from 1930 to present. I was looking at your collection and I enjoy both the toned examples and your photographing of your collection. I don't have many toned examples, but I felt inspired to take at least one shot of something I have. So here's my blue toned 1934-D; front and back fused quickly in Photoshop...

Trying to finish out a set of Walking Liberty half dollars. I need the 1921's, but who does not.
I do have a complete set of Lincoln's and I am trying to work them all into MS quality. I am in the early twenties in that endeavor.
A full set of IHP, minus the 1877. I can not afford the grade that I want.
A full set of the silver eagles in MS-69 or better. And then varieties and errors.

To answer your collection. I collect a lot more than Lincolns. But Lincoln Varieties are the only type of Varieties I collect.
I have a complete set of Indians, Lincolns, V-Nickels, Buffalos, Jeffersons, Mercs, FDR dimes, Washington quarters, walkers, Franklins, Kennedys, Peace Dollars, Ikes, SBA's, sacs and some Morgans. I also have a complete Dansco Type Album.
I don't collect proof coins. I only collect circulation strikes.
Also, I am trying to get all my Pre 34's Lincolns in XF or higher, and all the Post 34's in BU.

Very nice 34D! I love the blue toning! I also have 1930 - present in all BU. I've been working on my 20's next, I have serveral but they are very tough in unc. The 24-D is almost impossible in BU unless you're willing to spend major $$$.
I have the most major blue coin I've ever seen, check out the pics!

This guy up above me is just plain crazy, he'd collect lint from his mother's shoe... <grin> Gocha Joe!
I started my set of Lincoln's with my grandfather's help as a boy almost 25 years ago. I think some of the coins are still in that set... Sometimes now I think about slabbing the 14-D and the 31-S, I did the 09-S VDB years ago because the value has sky rocketed in the last 10-15 years.
I actually started collecting RPM's almost 15-20 years ago because I couldn't afford the real nice stuff in the type set. I wish I would have updated the 13-S, 17-S and the 22-P then. The rest of the set is better than XF and I REALLY don't want ot by a 22-P now....:(
Why don't you collect proofs?
I have just never been interested in them. I like the way they look when they are new, but I hate it when they get hazy. I used to have some proofs like the 1970 S small date, 81 S type 2, 99 S close AM, and I had all the proof sets from 68 to now, but one day I just decided to sell all of them buy some other coins that I wanted. Now I just focus my attention on buying Key and Semi-Key dates. As I collect more, I realize that quality is better than quantity. My proof sets and mint sets were just taking up space. I sold all my proof and mint sets and upgraded some of my Key dates like my 22 plain. I also bought some CC morgans.

Smart move IMO. I've been seriously contemplating selling all of my proof and mint sets as well....for a couple of years now....for the same reasons as you. I don't really enjoy the sets and I rarely look at them, they don't really appreciate in value that much so I don't know why I even keep them. Many times I've mulled over the idea of selling them all and buying just a few key dates that would take up less space I could actually enjoy owning.

The hard part is finding someone who will buy them all for a reasonable price. I brought all mine to a coin show, and the dealers all wanted to pay 20% less than bid.

Indeed, I hang around dealers enough to know their practices...but they have to sell at bid and bid -10%, so I don't blame them. They gotta eat too, lol.
The best bet is selling on forums like this one. Ebay will kill you with fees and most of those sets sell so cheap it's not worth the hassle. I kind of feel that I'm stuck with them! LOL
I sold all of my mint sets and proof sets 1968-2008 for around $900 on Ebay. Shipping was expensive too.

I was hoping for $1200. Trying to sell them for 2 months taught me that it was not going to happen. The 1999-2008 sets are not bad to get rid of, but some of the others people wont even touch...like the 82. Anyhow, the PCGS XF40 1909 S Indian and the PCGS VF30 1892 Carson City Morgan, will eventually surpass $1200 a lot faster than those mint sets....and they wont take up the space. Coin clutter can be a real problem.

BadThad, I had no idea that MS65 and up Memorials were so tough. Three years ago I went out and bought multiple OBW of every year from 1959 thru 2006. The D mintmarks were TOUGH, and 1988 are usually scarred with the dreaded spots. The point is, in addition to the OBW rolls, I also always keep every unspotted clad memorial, and have a five gallon Culligan jar that is filled completely with only BU/AU clads. For later, when I cannot remember my name...lol.
But it is still a thrill seeing everone else's new finds

If you look at them closely, from a grading perspective, most are not up to snuff. I've gone through my share of BU rolls too....believe me, lol. They are plagued with spots, hits, poor strikes and worn dies.

Indeed, lol. When friends and family come over and see me looking through a box they always ask "what the hell are you doing there?". They don't quite understand. :LOL_Hair:
My niece got it a couple of months ago. She was at the house when I came home with 5 rolls of halves. I sat down in front of after the usual question...."what are you doing with those?". I said WATCH. I poured out the rolls in front of her and it ended up being a nice score with 5 silvers and 10 90%'s. I said see...just by asking at the bank I just made $$$, it took me 5 minutes. I had the last laugh! :)
