View Full Version : Cookie Cutter
What causes this. I see now MDD on the motto or data..Just a weird cookie cutter type shape that goes fully around the bust..

I would think that this would be caused by a mint worker retooling a die that was abraided in an attempt to give the bust more definition rather than flattening into the field. As always I would hope to see some other opinions.

That practice was started around the mid - thirty's and continued up until the 1943 Lincoln cent.
The working hub was the piece that was tooled and it was thought that by doing this, the die would last longer and have better definition. It was not worth the effort.
