Is this a hit or the start of something else? It seems to be in the main place I always see step weakness at. Coincidence?

Have you tried to set another cent on top of this coin to see if the curve matches?
If it does then I think you probably have a post mint damaged coin. Otherwise, I don't really know what kind of error it could be.

This looks to have been struck through something like a string or piece of wire.

If the edge/edges of the furrow are above the fields of the coin then it is most likely PMD.

The wire brushes used at the mint to clean the die/machines sometimes lose bristles and get in between the die and plachet. I've seen struck throughs that look just like this, but hard to tell for sure that it's not post mint.

It does extend down into the field, but the last step is there. Almost looks like a piece of wire was bent over the step.
