I'm considering buying this coin. What do you think? Does it look XF45? Any reason that I should not buy it? PCGS XF45 $1050.

Hi Brad,
I did a quick check on ebay for XF's along with completed and found one in a store for $950 B.I.N./OBO. It is XF40 ANACS and isn't as dark. There looks to be a hit on the cheek so I copied that just in case you were interested:

I checked the website that is selling that coin and they say that Coin World Trend XF40 is $1100. PCGS lists XF40 at $950 and FMV lists XF40 at $930. This is XF45, I personally love the chocolate brown coloring and it does look XF45 to me and it's graded by PCGS so I would say that it is a sound investment. Since PCGS is the strictest TPG you could always cross-over for a higher grade somewhere else (I wouldn't though). I think they priced it nicely, nice find. I hope others voice their opinion on this.

Good Luck,
Lestrrr

Go for the MS65 that they have :D! Even though it's on hold.

Yea. Its a very nice coin but I dont like to buy anything at price. The PCGS price is around that. Maybe if they would sell it at the xf40 price then it would be a good buy. PCGS is the top of the TPG but I wouldnt buy anything at the price they list. It just doesnt seem like your getting a deal, just a buy. Just like a car lot, they have them listed at price, but you can always get it cheaper.

I found a few on Heritage in a PCGS slab with the same gradwe and they sold for only $40 more. Its a nice coin but the price is the listed price.

If it is a EF-45, it is just barely. The obverse strike appears a bit weak with flatness on the ear and check. The reverse has a stronger appearance, but I am not enamored with the striations that appear on that side or the mark through the right wheat stalk. However, that is just my opinion.

The first thing I noticed ( as did BJ ) was the Cheek and Jaw and it is dark. I would not bite. Of course , now a days ... the plastic says XF-45 so some might.

Here is maybe a good topic for a new thread..

It is my imagination but is there a greater lenience in this VF/XF grading than years ago . ( i.e. in pre-encapsulation day... like when I would send coins into ANACS and they'd come back with grade and photo )

I agree with BJ and John, The streaking is the holder but the right wheat is a little weak. The OBV looks almost XF45 to me. I remember that it only takes one side on a circ to grade the better grade. I.E. XF40 REV / XF45 OBV they will grade XF45. Sometimes the grading services will grade better for dealer's that send to them in quantity also. It is XF40-45 so if you want a nice slab with a decent grade, then go for it Brad!!!!

I bought it. This week I brought it to the pickest, and most experience coin dealer I know....Gabe. He told me that it was definitely an XF, but maybe a 40. The other coin I showed him was in a PCGS slab and he felt it was cleaned...so I am getting a refund. Anyhow, its mine now. You can see it in my album.

Sweet! Very nice coin. Which coin are you returning for a refund? Did you buy a different 14' D before this one?

Congrats, hopefully you did make a lower offer just to see if they would.
