Can Corosion spread onto any other coins it comes in contact with?

Good Morning Jonathan,

I've never paid attention to general circulation coins because I send those back to the bank. My Unc. ones go into tubes/flips/2x2's. I know people on here have said that they don't put corroded coins in with the others so I have to believe that it would affect others. It sounds possible over time.

YES...to the point!..If there is a corroded coin in a roll with non corroed ones, after time you will see it spread to the others.

Ok thank you, then i better get my 1944 S coin out of all of the rest of my 1944's. Thanks again.

If they are in a roll then YES, I would take the bad ones out. But if they are just by each other, you wont have nay problem unless you leave them there for 50 years maybe ..lol

Oh, ok thanks. I guess i should get them out of the "corrosion" bag then. lol! Though if they're not going into rolls what use will they be to me?

Corrosion is like cancer. Spreads unless singled out and eliminated early.

Hey Jonathan,
I want to let you know that under no circumstance should you leave corroded coins with any kind of green, black or orange on them either near or touching one another. This comes from personal knowledge I have from hundreds of thousands of bulk and rolled coins I have searched. I can guarantee that if you leave a coin with 'verdigris' (that real pretty green mossy looking stuff) touching a non-infected coin that you will very soon have two infected coins. Once that corrosion eats into the metal surface of the coin it will probably continue until the coin is ruined.

just trashed 2 last night that even under magnification you could not even see a tiny spec of the coin. at least it was the size of a penny. probably a 55 double.:LOL_Hair:

Yeah sometimes i've picked up a coin that was nice and i just scratched the corrosion off. How long does it take before the coin will get terrible? Like how fast does corrosion spread across the coin?

Jonathan,
It happens a lot quicker than you can imagine. For an experiment take a non-collectible coin, a fairly nice coin, and put it in a little ziplock baggie with several other coins with the green stuff. Make sure the coins are touching, and then wait a couple of days. Chance are, the original nice coin will show some transfer of the verdigris. If the green stuff is on top the surface of the coin chances are you will be able to remove it with goo-gone or mineral oil, and perhaps save it from further damage. If the corrosion has broken the surface of the coin you might as well toss it as that will never come off, and will continue to do damage.

Thank you Jean, I'll try your experiment. I hope though that it hasn't happened already with some older coins i've put in. I don't usually like to save those really corroded coins unless they're under 1959. I should hury up and check so my other coins don't get affected. Thanks again, Jonathan

Can surfac corrosion be removed without losing all the coins value? I found a roll of 1960-D double dies (the whole roll has double dates) which had gotten wet before i got it. The coins felt moist to the touch. I rinsed them with distilled water and blow-dried them.

The dumbest question in the world is the one you don't ask...
