I've had this 1994 DDR 001 for two months or so and finally decided to bring it out of hiding. When the horribly disfigured coin surfaced out of a roll i was searching I had a sinking suspicion that it would be the DDR. Of course it was, and the excitement of finding a great variety was mostly overshadowed by the state of the coin. I think it's safe to say that all damage is post mint...but what the heck happened? It's pretty odd to see a coin with nice color looking so thoroughly scratched up while maintaining alot of its detail. I'm just relieved it wasn't a much harder to find coin....anyone else have this sort of thing happen?

Unfortunately with my luck I kind of expect it to work that way for me. I still keep a positive attitude though...AND YES! I know I just contradicted myself there.

That is a shame but you will find a nice replacement.

I experienced similar disappointment a while back finding a 1971 DDO with a case of road rash. I kept it anyway.

Unfortunate that this had to happen. It doesn't happen to me because I chunk all the corroded and damaged coins BEFORE looking through them...not worth my effort. I would rather skip one of these and not know it rather than find one and have a sub-standard coin in my collection.

For every corroded and damaged coin I toss aside, I have that much more time to search through coins that would be in collectible condition. Just makes sense to me.

One thing can be gained from this experience, though. For every damaged 1994 DDR out there, the ones in collectible condition become one rarer and more collectible. There HAS to be a pot at the end of every rainbow. ;)

Just another short-story...

I opened up a batch of 1941 plain cents once - about 20 rolls. I cast aside some 50 coins that were just JUNK. Never thought about them again until I had gone through the remainder of the decent coins. In the decent coins I found a couple of keepers and was happy enough.

When I finished that batch, I decided - just for the sake of bedding down my curiosity - to go through the corroded roll-worth before releasing them to the hounds. I found a nice doubled die among them, and promptly tossed it back in the pile before having second thoughts about keeping an eye sore of a coin.

I have since stopped this practice and quelled my curiosity by going through more batches of decent coins. The Lord sees all things equally, so I figure the less time I waste on junk the more time I have to find the real gems that are waiting for me.

Now let's say your looking through a roll 1958's or 69 S's to be more realistic. Wouldn't the curiousity get to you...Just a peek is all it takes on these. Would you just toss without looking?

If you are asking about the 1958 because of the 1958 DDO, you might as well forget it. The 1958 DDO is not a real doubled die. There are two of them, with very little or no chance another will ever be found. If you spend any extra money looking for one, you should stop.

As far as the 1969S DDO goes, I look at all 1969S cents. I look at all 1944D, 1970S. If I find any of them damaged, I would sell them, so yes...I'll look through damaged coins. I just don't look at everything that's damaged. Only the dates on which I might find one of the really major gems.

Ya, I was referring to the 58' DDO and that's how I've always viewed it also... not going to find one. That's why I went with the 69 S for the example. I pull out the known dates to look at immediately and the others go in a little dish to look at when I get time.

Thanks,
Lestrrr
