Hi all - Should I be taking my new 2009 cents out of their shrink wrapped covering and placing them in plastic tubes? I have 2008s that are in shrink wrappers and they appear to be toning the end coins which I don't really want. i imagine that will cause some trouble for the other coins in the wrappers down the road. please let me know your thoughts. Thanks - Chris

I don't think it really matters. Toning is a matter of environment where they are stored, not so much what they are wrapped in. I have 1995 rolls in shrink sleeves that are still just fine.

Perhaps the plastic shrink wrap is a somewhat airtight place to store coins, as long as the shrink wrap has no harmful chemicals.
My concern is with the antique and modern paper wrappers. We know that printed paper can deteriorate on its own because of the chemicals they use to make the ink stick to the paper easier and dry faster. I am quite certain the companies that made these wrappers did not consider archival paper and ink to be necessary to help preserve the coins.

The shrink rolls are open onthe ends and are not at all air tight.
Regardless of the type of wrapping storage is the key. Storing cents in a cool, dry and dark environment is the best way to keep them safe. Moisture and extreme temperatures are killers, and it doesn't matter what the coins are stored in.

Hi everyone,if I want to protect and preserve a coin or coins I'm a fanatic. I vacuum seal them with a Food Saver kitchen appliance. Draw backs are one side is diamond patterned. Some effort involved. Checked with manufacturer and material is polypropylene. But they'll be safe for many years, I hope. Whoops, Iput the coins in 2X2's before sealing them. MAKE SURE TO FLATTEN OUT THE STAPLES.
