View Full Version : Speaking of banks.....

Today I took back a refilled box of fed cents I purchased at my bank a couple weeks ago. I also took my wheat cent collection in the Dansco album to show to the tellers.
You would think the tellers had never seen a bright shiny new Lincoln in their entire lives. Not only that, but one of them pointed out the steel cents and said, "I have never seen these before. What are they?".
I know this is a small town, but.............:tinysmile_cry_t3:! golly gee.

Jean...this doesn't surprise me in the least. Look at the VAST population of younger generation in this country working in retail who look at you funny when you try to spend a $2 bill or a half dollar. They are SO wrapped up in thier cell phones and their own little box lives they refuse to notice the world and everything they are missing by being so intellectually blind.
Teen #1 - "umm, like....yeah...this dude was trying to pass this TWO dollar bill to me, and I'm like...what do you think I am, stupid? So then I like told him to totally take that fake thing away or I'll so call the cops - there's no such thing as a TWO dollar bill, dummy!"
Teen #2 - "whoa...how stupid can they get? Where's the party Saturday?"

And yes, I live around teens, so I know how they talk.

It isn't surprising that parents cannot communicate with their teenagers.
Our 10 year old grand daughter is growing up in the microwave instant gratification society. I have her semi-interested in coins, but only if they have horses on them.
My other 10 year old grand daughter visited for a few days. She brought along one of her school buddies. I had them playing pickup sticks and taught them how to play marbles. It was a lot more fun than watching them play with their electronic toys.
If you gave a stick and a piece of string to a child these days they would have no idea what to do with it. For me it was a horse with reins, or a fishing pole. As kids we learned how to do a lot with very little... now the kids do very little with a lot.
I guess we can say we had a much better childhood because we knew how to use our imaginations. Thank goodness!

I agree totally- if it wasn't for my Dad teaching me about coins I would never know about money- I just turned 23. So I know about the cell phones and the video games!
My Grandma used to give me 2 dollar bills all the time in cards for different occasions and she taught me about them. I tell my friends about what my Dad and I do and they always say- you look at pennies? whats there to look for? thats weird. Little do they know that there are things like doubled dies or varitites to look for-and let alone they understand what it is to spend time with their parents. It is really a shame- but hey they are the ones cashing in the coin jars for stuff for us to find right?

If I can find a teaching placement in the fall, and that group is junior or senior high, I think I'll at some point try and experiment where I see if anyone (knows about) or believes that a $2 bill or a 1943 steel cent I show them are real or not. They'll probably think they are fake and not even care. Video games, texting and chatting do really seem to be all that teens today are interested in...

Jean:
The tellers are always surprised - try showing them an off-centered cent - they go balistic!

Great idea Roger. I actually have some to show.
They did go a bit glassy eyed when I showed them the 22 No D, and told them it is listed at about 4K right now.

Jean: It will be on it's way, however you must send Squirrel as deposit before I ship. (LOL)
I also have a teenager, I have them all around me. I am thinking about writing a book called "Teenagers Talk for Dummies". Maybe it hasn't been written yet.

Well, Joe, I doubt if you want the vet bills that would come along with Squirrel The Cat.
He is 17 years old now and takes more meds than I do.
So guess I better get back to the end of the line my next chance.
boohoo..

The kids are a product of the society we built for them. To fast, to easy, and zero responsibility. "Be careful what you wish for" my father used to say. Well, look at us now. I say lets slow it down a bit, learn how to enjoy the little thing again. Oh ya we do enjoy the little things. Now lets teach the kids!

Jean: That is one ole Kat! I had a Pekingese that was 19 when he passed away so I know about the Vet Bills.
