1972 DDO confusion

I meant to post this auction yesterday. I hate when someone does this.

I'm sure many LCRers have seen this before: a seller takes a slabbed '72 DDO (usually dies 3, 8 or 2) and attempts through vague descriptions - comparing their auction to another that is selling (die #1) or (in this case) using prices from Coinworld for die #1 and a small[bottomed] picture of the ANACS slab saying die #2 - to sell their coin at a higher rate.

So the buyer here just picked up a die #2 MS64RD for $150.

I use that magnifier on my bottom bar all the time. Blown up 400% makes things like that easy to see.

$150 is not that bad of a price for Die 2 these days...I may have bought it. I'm looking for a Die two in 64+.

Although that's true the seller does deliberately quote prices for die 1... not that an auction telling me how much the item is worth ever made me change my bid.

I don't see this problem going away anytime soon, partially because the sellers may not even know there is a difference. For me it's usually less aggravating than having to sift through all the listings with misattributions, die deterioration doubling, machine doubling, die cracks...

It's a double problem. Ignorant buyers are getting coins they may very well not want (and for too much money) and then there are those who are genuinely interested in the same coins but get priced out.

I would like to find a nice Die #8, MS65 EDS that isn't out of control expensive...(some day.)

I sold an NGC 65/Red EDS Die #2 years ago for $175. So, they can hold their value.

I paid $115 for my NGC MS65RD Die #2 last year - I thought it seemed too high but in light of the recent info. it appears I was wrong...

I have a 1972 double die which similar. when I compare it to the Linclon Cen Resource page, I believe I have a DDO1, but now I am not so sure. It is pretty never the less.

Can can anybody give their opinion what I have?

There should be no doubt in any one's mind when they have a Die-001. The separation is extreme, even compared to any of the other strong doubled dies for 1972. My avatar shows how strong the spread is on a die-001.

No one has ever noticed (or asked) but my aviator is also from die #1; the doubling is naked eye obvious.

The 1972 you posted looks like either die #3 or as was suggested die #8. I don't see gouges above the Ts in TRUST so I am, without any other pictures, inclined to go with #3.

Search the threads for a reference book thread, there are a few good ones with great suggestions...ON a final note, avoid, if you can, taking any information from eBay sellers. What they sell might be legit, but for the most part there is mass confusion regarding physical processes and terminology.

I tried clicking on the various eBay links that everyone has graciously pasted. There expire. A technique I use to archive eBay examples is coverting/printing the lsting to PDF. It works quite well and a PDF upladed to this server will be preserved for furtue reference.
