2009-P Transitional Missing "E"

My best guess is this is a Struck through grease on the "E" of UNITED but doesn't make much sense to be in such a small area. Part of the bottom of the "E" is there, could be a machining defect?

I would go with the planchet being damaged prior to the striking of the coin. More than likely a depression or lamination of the planchet.

Looks like it took a hit or was scraped. Its on the T and D also. Alot of these new cent are banged up pretty nice
