Hard to tell, but looks like MD to me.

except for the raised nature of the doubling, it is not the flat scrapping, but it looks like another layer on top of the letters, and there are no instances of MD on the date...

We need clearer pictures to be certain. I agree, from what is provided the motto looks like it has MDD.

MD doesn't need to be all over the coin. I think what you're seeing with another layer on top, is more of an optical illusion.

thanks to everyone - I am also going through about 5000 wheat pennies from my grandmother

there are concentrations of dates around 1936 - 1941 - 1944- 1955 - and a ton of 56-57-58, some in spectacular condition...I will post some cool stuff soon
