Is this post mint damage or some other cause?

the only thing I could find on the 1972D is 3 DDO's, pretty much all with doubling on LIBERTY, the motto and the date. Recheck all of those, maybe you have something there, if not I'd say it's a worn die on the R and post mint damage on the U making it spread and appear thicker. Extra thickness due to post mint damage can cause the letters to appear wider or extremely close. Once again, just my opinion.
