Here's the R3 design, known as the "Professional Life" at the Illinois state capital.

Top is with the bulls-eye for the central part of the design.

Bottom is with a simple doubled columns type of overlay.

That's what one would be looking for. Probably will not find one that where the extra column or columns extend all the way down like we see in the overlay but more likely would be portions of the column or columns.

Out of all the quarter designs, I see 2 reverse designs that to me would make perfect center of the design doubled dies. One of them happened. Bingo, that is the District of Columbia. The lettering at the center (ELLINGTON) was perfect for making a beautiful doubled die, and, we got to see it happen on the 2009-D 25c DC CDDR-001.

There is another design on the state quarter reverse that in my opinion would also make a killer doubled die. But, to date, I do not have even one DDR listing yet for that particular reverse design. Care to guess which state quarter reverse design I'm talking about that would make another killer doubled die?

I hope so, but, if it goes anything like we have seen in the past, we will see very few if any doubled dies on the R3 and R4 designs.

Lets not forget that there may be the possibility of a DDO on the 3rd release. I would like to see an overlay of what a possible tilted hub doubled obv would look like also. I think that would be an awsome coin in my eyes.

Well, I guess only a couple cared to take a guess at what I believe to be the other state quarter reverse design that would have been a great candidate for a killer doubled die.

It is the Washington state reverse design. Attached is the artist drawing of the reverse design with the bulls-eye overlay for the central areas. What do we have in this area? Flat field and lettering (THE EVERGREEN STATE).

So, what did we have on the District of Columbia on the reverse central area. Again, we had surrounding flat field, piano keys (which when viewed under stereo 3D is actually very near the same level as the flat field), and most importantly, lots of lettering (ELLINGTON).

Bam, we have a big doubled die released into circulation that exhibits massive doubling on the letters "ELL" of ELLINGTON to include some piano keys, parts of the hand and upper shoulder area for the District of Columbia reverse.

What if we had had the equivalent distance and strength in doubling that we see on the District of Columbia reverse had happened on the Washington state reverse design?

Bottom drawing gives us an idea of what we could have seen. Now, if that had happened and was released into circulation like the District of Columbia big DDR, bingo, we would have had another big one!

So, why didn't we get one on the Washington reverse? In my files, I don't even have one DDR listing assigned for this particular reverse. Why?

I have a theory. Whether true or not, who knows, but hear me out and see what you think about it.

Go back to when the Washington reverse was being produced. The year was 2007. What happened in 2007? Well, lets see, for the quarters you had the Montana, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. Bingo, we do have DDRs in 2007. They are on the Wyoming reverse! That's the reverse that hit those hubbing presses that has the problems. So, the other state reverse designs missed those hubbing press problems.

Don't believe me? Lets go further.

Go back to 2005. What's happening that year? Hmmm ... lets see, that year we have the California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas and West Virginia. Need I say more? Just look at the Minnesota and Oregon doubled die reverses. We had a ton of them!

Lets go to 2006. Well, we have the Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota and South Dakato. Geeze, that was a dud year for state quarter doubled dies! But wait, what else happened in 2006? Oh yea, now I remember, all those killer doubled dies happening on the 2006 Lincoln cents and especially the big DDO 2006 cent and the nice doubled earlobe and beard doubled dies!

Starting to see a pattern going on? Again, this is just a theory that I have, but when you start putting it all together through the years one starts to see pieces of the puzzle start fitting together.

Whether you agree or disagree or somewhere in between on my theory, at least I do hope this gets you to thinking more out of the box and look at what has and is happening with ALL denominations and not just the Lincoln cents.
