According to an e-mail I received from the ANA, this Sunday, February 10th, at 7pm ET/ 6pm CT/MT, CBS will air a story about the debate as to whether or not the US mint should discontinue production of cents and nickels. Morley Safer will interview experts on the subject including Mint Director Edmund Moy. Sounds interesting.

SHOULD WE MAKE CENTS? - The U.S. Mint is in a bind: should it continue to produce pennies and nickels whose metal content is worth more than their face value? Morley Safer reports. David Browning is the producer.

"From The US Mint Perspective it's unsustainable you can't sustain losses on Penny's and Nickels."

Thanks for the preview Pat. From the looks of it cents AND nickels are all but done in their current form.

I thought that the episode was good. I'm glad they put pictures of the new reverses up. After watching all those coins shaking, tumbling, and banging... I know why you don't see many MS70's.

Dude, I got so excited when I saw all those pennies from the penny drive.

From what Director Moy said something has got to be done but he also doesn't want to get rid of the denomination. Could that mean a copper plated steel cent or maybe the coin will be replaced by a one cent stamp. Just speculation.

An article in Coinage suggested copper colored steel being an option.

saw the article about the mint

if the Zinc company in TN can keep the price reasonable for the mint - i dont think they will switch any time soon - might put themselves out of business

if the mint switches to steel cents - wouldn't steel cents be harder to strike for the dies & make them wear out quicker. Plus, wouldnt the pennies be heavier to haul & ship around ????

Would reducing the size help?Coupled with metal mods, it might help. I'll still love it, just not as much
