I found this coin in an original 1963-d bank roll. It looks to me that it was struck on cloth? Any ideas.

Thank you
George

I don't see a weave pattern I would expect to see on a cloth strike through. By looking at the coin, I am more inclined to believe it may have been struck through a heavy thick grease or something.

I agree with Bob it is not struck thru cloth/rag. I do believe that it was also an excessive worn die and proably the coin was struck thru grease or lubricant. Coins like this can be deceiving and alot of the damage is done PM and can appear in OBW rolls.

Post mint damage. Coin has been subjected to extreme heat. BLOW TORCH .

BJ,
I had thought of the possibility it had been torched, but he stated it was in an original 1963-D bank wrapped roll. I guess that doesn't mean too much as this coin does not look BU either.

That coin is pitted so bad that I wouldn't think a torch would cause that look, to me a acid bath or sand blasted is more likely to make it look like that...................., and heating copper would have put at least some kind of tone on the coin, like when you sweat copper pipe, it turns blue to deep red at the heat source, just my thought, because I've sweated enough copper pipe and seen the effects.

... or sand blasted ...

Many years ago, when I was in the Navy Shipyards in Norfolk, we had to do a lot of sandblasting on the ship. Sometimes it was done on some coins and that was what they looked like after sandblasting.

Hey Barry,
Did you get a chance to read the previous posts? I'm not sure I understand what your saying or asking. :)

Just to note to everyone this was found in an original bank roll and i think these rolls i got from this older fella had them in his basement for years and i think this is why this coin is not in bu color. As for torched lol it might be possible. It is a fun coin to have in my collection just trying to get some ideas on it.

That's the way to get some input just post it here on the Forum. The more you search the more you are going to find (coins) that you will have questions about.

That's 1/2 the fun!!!!!!!!!!!:)
