I feel silly for asking but, is there a trick to taking decent pictures through a loupe? When Im taking a photo my camera doesnt focus when I hold the loupe against the lens, so I end up holding the loupe somewhere midway between the lens and the coin. This method produces maybe one decent shot out of 10 because of hand movement. So, any tips on this or am I SOL until getting a nice macro lens? Thanks.
Eric~

Not to be "funny" but the best solution is to buy a binocular scope. Shooting pictures through a loop,as you have found, is an iffy proposition with minimal results.

iffy indeed. Sometimes I think it easier to just draw a sketch of the coin. haha

I no longer shoot through a loupe, but when I was using one, I had one in particular that worked by holding it against the lens which allowed for better pictures.
You could possibly use a tripod, an easel (of some sort) for the coin and some device (maybe just a box with some sill-puddy) to stabilize the loupe when shooting...

You'll need to set your camera to the macro setting and turn off the flash. A 10x loupe will get the overall coin, while a 15x will allow closer shots.
If you don't have a macro setting then buying the binocular scope or a camera with a macro setting is about all you can do.

Yeah Im using the macro setting my camera has and a 8X loupe. I can get some nice clear close-ups when the moon and stars align just right. But I just want to improve my 1/10 quality ratio. I think as stated above, Ill need to make some sort of "holder" for the loupe.

Not all cameras will work the same with a loupe - I have tried several combinations and found that the macro setting doesn't always benefit the final outcome when using a loupe.
Digital cameras focus by either using algorithms to interpret very small areas of contrast in a specific area of the scene or by triangulating a position with an assist infrared beam. Either way these cameras weren't necessarily designed to have an auxiliary lens placed in front the regular lens so there could be a range of complications – each camera will likely have its own quirks.
