I'm getting this up a little late. I have what might be a minor 1979D RPM. The possible split serif doesn't look completely correct, but I cannot fully tell. The face of the MM took a hit, but I don't see the corner having taken one thus forming a dent looking like a split serif...however, I am not sure...

There is a defective mint mark punch used this year, and this die is one of them it was used on. The more 1979D's you check, I am pretty sure you will see more, just like this one.

And I want to add that this very same mintmark with the chip out of bottom
serif is also on the dime, nickel, quarter, half and SBA. I searched and searched
and made a set.

Thanks Bob. I can't say I have made any special point to really examine '79Ds as I just don't see very many...will now know for future searches...

I am glad to see this posted, I came across the same one the other day and studied it for a while trying to figure out what was going on with the MM. I set it aside to figure it out later.

Well, Jason, that is a most interesting coin and question for you to ask about... Seems as I think you posted that one before on another thread... :~)
Broken punch.
Where have I seen that before.... ;-)

The original post was made over a year ago Wendell, long before you were even a member. Since then, Jason, as well as a lot of us hasve learned a lot.
This is what replying to an old thread leads to. We end up re-reading and/or replying to the same things over and over again.

This silly thread (from 14 months ago) is still hanging around? LOL...
RPMs are still my weak point. I need to invest some more time in them...when I find more time.

From what you've told me JC...you already have a full plate.
Oh me oh my, where DOES the time go???

True stories Aisha, too much to do, too little time. I need to clone myself, then I would have time to delve deep into RPMs. I have a ton of new examples of various errors - but no time to photograph them. I did manage to finish that Class I tutorial for Billy...it was only two months later than I promised...
