Photography, as most anyone can notice by my photos is not my strong point.

I would like to share a little trick I learned today about shadows.

When taking a full coin photo you might get shadowing on the background that your coin is lying on oposite the direction of the lighting source.

I have been going throw the painstaking effort of trying to crop the coins photo from the background and placing it on another background. This also will remove a part of the rim of the coin photo. You may have seen some photos that look like that.

Try this simple and inexpensive background.

Use a small bowl, stretch a piece of platic wrap over the top of it, lay the coin in the middle on top of the warp, direct your lighting so that no shadows show at the bottom of the bowl behind the coin.

Below are a couple of my photos to indicate what I am talking about. The coins may be a bit blurry but notice the difference in the shadowing. If you have a steadier hand than me or a stand this will look a lot better.

I think that photograghing the coins this way even makes the ugly coins look better..... well maybe not but I do like that appearance of floating above the background.

You could also to the obivious..:) Once you have set your Key light then add a fill light or reflector to fill in the harsh shadow..:)
