Hello all.
As you can tell I am new here.
First I want to say what a wonderful site.
Next I need advice.
I have looked throught the site and I have came across something that matches one of the descriptions.
The 1982 DDR DIE 1 in your Extremely Rare Varities.
I have 5 old timey metal 7 gallon milk carriers they are full of pennys.
I have spent the last 7 hours going through these pennies by date and I found 2 that match the 1982 DDR DIE 1.
I have obtain these coins from a Grandfather that had past away in 1985.
Never gone through them and I have been offer money for them several times. Not selling.
But I need advice on what to do. Like with the 2 mentioned above.
I am sure I have others in these jugs.
Can anyone help me with this. I know it is alot for a newbie to ask but ita worth a shot.
Thanks in advance Chad
First, doubled check it with these pics: http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1982&die_id=1982p1dr001&die_state=mds
Can you take some pictures? Do you have a scanner?

Hi Chada and welcome. If you have an interest in coins I don't blame you for not selling. If you can post some photos WE CAN help you. You don't happen to live in New Hampshire do you? The reason I ask is I do business with a family in NH that I have been told has numerous large, old milk containers full of cents. I have inquired about them in the past but was old they were not for sale.

Here are the pictures hope they are ok and sorry for the size.
2006 Penny
1982 Penny
I hope these pictures help. The 14 pictures of the 1982 are of 3 different 1982 Pennys.
Thanks for the help.

I'm sorry Chada but in the best interest of the users here I had to delete the posts with the photos. The files were way too large. They slowed my computer down to a crawl and I have broadband. The poor souls that are on dial-up are probably still waiting.
From what I was able to see the doubling appeared to be from die deterioration. Maybe if you could resize the file and/or post fewer photos at one time we may be able to more easily determine exactly what you have. I'm really sorry. I know you must have gone to a lot of work to take and post all of those photos. This is the first time I've had to do this. :~

Thanks Chada. Those worked much better. The '82's I believe to be caused by die deterioration. I would like to hear what the opinions of some other members are. The 2006 appears to have been caused by a die crack running through Mr. Lincoln's head.
Again, are they from a NH hoard?
The 1982 does not look like a doubled die. Looks like strike doubling. The 2006 looks like a die crack/break.

Strike doubling (mechanical damage) on the 82
Welcome Chada,
By the time you have looked thought those 35 gallons I'll bet you will have a lot of interesting finds. Have fun searching.

I believe there are two different '82's shown but be them either strike doubling or die deterioration the doubling exhibited are not of a collectible type. Often times coins with this type of doubling do however sell for a premium to uneducated collectors believing them to be collectible. With the knowledge you have gained here it would be unethical to represent them as anything but what they are in an attempt to profit from them. It would be perfectly fine for you to try to sell them for a profit as long as you describe them accurately. Thank you for your patience in resizing the photos. Again, I'm sorry to have to have put you through that. Welcome to the forum and come back often with any questions you might have. Be sure to let us know when you come across an interesting find. Chada, do you have a copy of The Cherrypicker's Guide? If not I suggest you get one before you search any further or you'll just end up going through the same coins all over again. It's the fourth edition volume one you're looking for.

Chada...I had one just like yours and learned the MAJOR dissappointing way about strike doubling as well...Mine looks very similar to yours. I posted some stuff I found about it in the beginners section of the forum and it really helped me better understand the difference in doubled die and strike doubling.
Good luck with your searching!
Yeah those should be fantastic finds.. Get a good microscope. For sure.. OR just send some my way..:)

Well I do have a good microscope. It is a Nasco Stereo Microscope.
Thanks for the input. Not sure though if I understand. There are 2 differnet types of doubling. If so how are they different and how do you tell.

Take a look at the errors section of the forum.. There is some good examples of MMD (Machine/Strike Doubling).
MMD is usually evident with a FLAT SHELF like appearance..
For example: Click This LInk (http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?t=216)
