I have been looking for more than 10 years for this variety.

My daughter brought me two 5,000 count bags of pennies from GA that the bank was getting ready to send to the FED Bank to be counted and recirculated. I opened the lst bag this morning. I was on about the 600th coin when I ran across this and did a double take.

The coin is fairly nice on the obverse, however when you get to the reverse it has some nice remanents of glue/corrosion:( on the left side and is also a "Struck Through Error" on the right hand side.:)

I am not going to complain as it still is the :)1996 1c CDDO-001/WDDO-005 and is seldom seen and commands a nice premium when found.

This will be a good addition to my collection until I can upgrade it.

I have been looking for more than 10 years for this variety.

I been searching 13 years and not one yet out of circulation. So your one infinitely beats my goose-egg, no matter what condition it is in.

Congrats.

Thanks for the compliment.:)

I have alot of time on my hands since I retired.:tinysmile_hmm_t:

I catch alot of dry spells that sometimes have lasted 3-4 weeks without any significant finds.

One thing this Forum has emphasized to me is to look at the whole coin starting from the center and work out.

Sometimes I catch myself getting bored and skip/pass over things. When I do this I quit for a couple of days or really slow down and take alot of breaks.

Also to the others with comments "Thank You" as it makes it worthwhile to share my finds with the Forum.

Unfortunately, as most of us can say, very tuff to find. I always wondered about this DDO in that if it was caught and pulled from production. The original discoverer of the variety is Richard Imburgia of Rochester, NY. He sent the coin to me back in late 1996 and an article about the variety was published in Numismatic News and the old variety club SDDCA newsletter. As far as I know, only a very few have been located. I would estimate less than 15 are confirmed.

With a lot of of us looking, and with a lot of us seeing a ton of '96 cents (I must have looked at thousands and thousands since 96) and not coming across one yet, it is certainly extremely scarce to say the least.

Thanks Joe and congrats on your super find ... you give us hope! The search goes on ....

Billy: Thanks for the comment and additional Info on the number of coins found. I was unaware of the low count but figured it had to be low based on the prices being attached to it.

Off looking for a nicer specimen (It will proably another 13 years) before I find one or never. Perfectly happy with what I have now.

Some additional info, the last time I talked with Richard he informed me that he had come across a total of 8 specimens out of circulation in his area. And has not come across any more for about 3 years now.

I did see one graded by ANACS MS-66/Red (was in the white cache holder) and it was for sale. I wanted to buy it but it was out of my pocket book range. As far as I know, it was or still might be the highest graded specimen in a third-party grading service encapsulated holder.

That would be some excellent finds and the MS-66 Red proably had a nice price tag on it however that would be a nice grade to have in my collection.

Should I ask the $$$$ amount?

Just received back from ANACS and the Nice Detail Grade surprised me.

Well worth the few bucks to have graded even for a damaged reverse on the coin.

It is a beauty and it matches the one lonely 1-O-V that I have in my collection to a tee. I even have the Zinc peeling on the six, it is uncanny. The corrosion on it is a bummer and I would really love to hear from the experts on methods that are tried and true to get rid of that nasty business.

You know--this is what i have tried on minor zincoln with corrosion pits forming on the cents. I take a toothpick with a minute drop of Clear-flo on the tip and watch under the 10X part of scope and place that drop on the corrosion pit and wait couple seconds, then take tip of kleenix and absorb it. It will remove it. It would be a "I'm Not Sure" thing with a major variety, I see nothing wrong with practicing this on very minor stuff.
