It has occurred to me that the rim is quite different than other 1917's I have seen. Is there any chance this coin is a proof?
Thanks for checking.
Jean
I replaced the pictures with the coin out of its holder. The coin is quite worn so it is possible the rims are simply worn down also.
Thanks again,
Jean

Jean it looks like it has the edge characteristics of a proof coin and has possibilities, however it is hard to say as it is in a holder which obstructs part of the edges of the coin.

Thank You Joe. I will photograph it out of the holder and resend.

Jean, after looking at your new photos I do not believe that it is an example of a proof.
Let others chime in with there thoughts.
Some coin just have wider rims than others. Only illegal proofs were made in 1917 anyhow.

Yes, Joe, I believe you are right. It never hurts to have the entire picture.. huh?
Illegal Proofs?
Wow Brad, you had me checking my library again, and now I know a great deal more about the 1917 Lincolns.
Thank you!

ok, I made it home from work finally and I agree that your 1917 is not a proof but now... Illegal proof 1917's? It's rumored that there may be true 1917 proofs but I haven't heard about anything being illegal. Can you fill me in on the story?
Thanks,
Lestrrr

Hey Lestrrr,
I could not find a particular story about illegal 1917 proofs, but I did check "The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents" by David W. Lange, and there is no mention of a 1917 proof cent minted that year.
Maybe Brad could fill us in on the story.
Jean
In Q. David Bowers' book "A Guide Book of Lincoln Cents", he references Walter Breen's 1988 Encyclopedia that states an unknown number of Proofs were "clandestinely made". pg. 153 There is no mint records of 1917 matte proofs being struck. The major grading services will not certify them.
I guess what I was saying was: If there are any 1917 proofs (which there may not be), they were illegally made.
