Cleaning a DD coin [Archive] - Lincoln Cent Resource

I just found another 1936 DDO-III and it has very good detail to it, clear date and motto, very few contact marks but with slight wear on Lincoln's cheek and jaw bone, which I guess is fairly common for a 71 year old circulated coin. One question though, is it a bad idea to clean off any debris or dirt that is filling in the letters on the motto? I was thinking of gently using a Q-tip, any ideas or should I just leave it alone? If it graded G-4 I would go ahead and clean it but I think this could grade VF+

I believe the golden rule is don't clean your coins. But it's your coin..:D

If there is dirt, you can try using a toothpick. The wood will not damage the coin, but may leave marks if you press too hard. I wouldn't though. How much dirt is there? Do you have a picture? The 1936 DDO-003 is a coin that I am looking to buy. I just can't find a nice one. Are you selling either of these? If you can get me good pics of either of these, I can post them on my site.

I will have pics of it later this week, I let a friend use my camera. What grade of 1936 DDO-III are you looking for or, better yet, what grade will you not go below because I do have 2 of them. I have no experience grading them so once I can get the pics together I'll notify you and you can decide for yourself. Thanks!

I really don't care about the grade. I want a problem free example that shows the variety well. I would rather have a Problem free Good with strong doubling than an XF cleaned with a scratch.
The only double dies that I am looking to buy right now are 1936 DDO-003, 1943 DDO-001, 1972 DDO-002, and 1972 DDO-003.
