Yesterday was the Annual Rochester Numismatic Associations Coin Show and Sale at the Eisenhart Auditorium, Rochester Museum and Science Center in Rochester, New York. The RNA is ANA #2 and one of the oldest clubs in America. I happened to pick up this specimen and about 100 others...long story but I will expand on this tale in an article at some later date; well about this coin, the D has what appears to be a Southeast spread which is indicative of the 1MM-004, however the markers shown on coppercoins and submitted by D. Yost are not present on this coin. The 4 and 3 also exhibit a Southeast spread and look to be doubled, the 9 has a faint southeast spread as does Mr. Lincoln's face. I wonder if this coin has been "reprocessed" and or tampered with in some way as the coin comes in at about MS65 and I always will be on the lookout for explanations of this phenomenon. It seems to me that a steel coin from over 65 years ago should exhibit some rust, even if just from the humidity. Please take a look and tell me what you think.

There might be some machine doubling (MD) on Lincoln's chin and die deterioration doubling (DDD) on the date and mint mark (MM).? Just a thought. I'm sure someone else will come along and let you know.

I'm no expert on this but my opinion would be that there appears to be some retooling of the profile of Lincoln and some die deterioration or MD shown at the date and MM. However there does look to be some class 6 doubling shown on the date. I do not believe this coin is reprocessed.
Sorry I can't be of more help on this. But more folks will come along and help.

Hi Jeff,
I do believe the most telling indication of reprocessing is the coin will exhibit a 'chrome-like' appearance. I have several exceptional uncirculated 1943 coins which have absolutely no outward sign of deterioration or rusting. The first coin I posted was graded by the coin shop owner as being MS65. The second coin is a reprocessed steel cent.
Oh, the coin shop owners are Jack Beymer and Tom Miller, and I feel I can trust their grading on coins I purchase from them.
I hope this helps you to be able to identify the real from the re-plated steel cent.

I agree with the die deterioration on the date. It's pretty obvious and common for the 43's. I also agree that the date, especially the 9, appears to be a moderate class 6 doubled die. Some of it may be lighting but again the 9 seems to look like a class 6. I would really like to see LIBERTY though. That might cinch it.
Jean, great pics of both samples. For beginners, a real 1943 compared to a reprocessed 43 is like learning the difference between machine doubling and a true doubled die. It's a little hard and confusing at first, but once it "clicks" theres no mistaking it.

Thanks Jean it appears this coin is not reprocessed from the excellent photos you supplied. I have attached a photo of Liberty. I notice here that the B E and R appear to be doubled. I don't know what to make of it myself and I really thank you folks for helping out.

I've attached a LINK (http://www.lincolncentresource.net/forums/showthread.php?t=4868) that I posted here on LCR that has couple of pics of a 1943 that is a class 6 doubled die obverse and has strong die deterioration. Notice the bottom the the letters IBE in LIBERTY and how they bow to the west.

Could this be something new? Dare I say it? It is not the 1DO-001 thats for sure but it is definitely something. Some more photos are attached.

Steve here is a shot of WE, it looks to be spread or flattened out in general and slightly doubled at the bottom, ofcourse the Microscope is better than the photos. I am working this issue and am positive that I will have an answer soon.

I was wondering if the lower leg of the E was curled up at the end or showing a ramp like effect. Many of the Class 6 DDOs show this but I can't really see it here. Thanks for posting the photos.

After looking thru some of the coins in my collection, I found an example exactly like your 43d, except from the San Fransisco mint. What looks like heavy doubling on the "4" and "S". Will examine it closer tonight for any other doubling in the areas you guys have mentioned. After reading the above posts I concluded that my coin has been reprocessed, as it exhibits a chrome-like finish. Can this doubling be a result of the reprocessing? Unfortunately, I am not set up right now to take any quality pics or I would share the images.
