View Full Version : 1983 Extra Letters
Does anyone know if there is any information on the Web regarding the 1983 "extra letters" variety. Ken Potter has a little.

The CPG, fourth edition, vol # 1, does have a picture of the rarer die of the two 1983 Lincoln cents that do have extra letters. I did have, at one time the "In God" triple lettering, but was offered a sum that I could not refuse. That die is a bit more common, however, is still considered very scarce.

Found it, thanks for the direction BJ.
I was referring to the 1983 Extra Letters on page 126 of the Quick Reference to the Top Lincoln Cent Varieities by Gary Wagon. I just bought one on Ebay. When I receive it, I will take some pics. I'm paying by personal check, so it may take a while. The one I purchased is different than the CPG.

That quick Reference to the Top Lincoln Cent Varieties is a nice little book. A companion to the Authoritative Reference On Lincoln Cents. It has a lot in it. Keep that little book in my pocket whenever I go hunting.
Brad,
If you would , take a look at page 23. There it lists a 1930S DDO-001. I own one in MS. Was thinking of pulling it to post some pics, if anyone is interested..
Was wondering... Has anyone heard of other 1930S DDO-001s out there? or anyone own one?
It is not listed on Coppercoins.
I would like to see some pics. That book has a lot of varieties that are not in the CPG.

This is a verified copy of LCDDO-003 by John Wexler. I think this one is Coneca (3-0-V) but not sure. John viewed this coin many moons ago...:LOL_Hair:

I think that there maybe some confusion to exactly what these extra letters are. They are not doubled dies and do not carry the DDO designation. They are considered counterclashes. None of the known doubled dies for this year, 1983, have extra letters.

One of the clashes also has the cud.
This is from Ken Potter's website:
1983 1c "Extra Letters In Motto;" shows portions of an "extra" N, G & O (from IN GOD), below and within IN GOD. This is the result of a counter clash; a piece of scrap steel was struck by a die and then counter sunk into this die. Neat variety now listed in A Quick Reference to the Top Lincoln Cent Varieties where it is listed as CLO-002.
Here are some pictures of my 1983 "Extra Letters" CLO-002

That is a nice coin Brad... I have a similar one bought quite a while back from Mr. Z it has the CUD. I only have a couple of those misaligned die clashes. Yours is one of the good ones..

Is yours the one listed in Cherrypickers? I need a pic of that one.

will do.
Need to go to the bank to take a look at some slabs tucked way there ...
in fact I was to send Mr Wiles a few 49s DDOs and am late in doing that . When I make the trip , will pull that one also.
This QX microscope I have been using to take pictures does not work well on slabs. If the coin is not in a 2x2 or raw I cannot focus it. Tried this morning on an ANACS slab of a 1989 showing some interestying doubling , and the results suck.
There is a recent thead from CC and Steven which may provide a work around. But I an over due in getting a stereoscope w/ digital hookup.
