I am not sure if this is an effect cause by machine doubling or may be it is indeed an rpm, to my aging eyes it looks like two d's on top of one another, it is not a hit so whatever it is was caused in the minting process.

Jeff, I think I see what you mean, but I am not sure what it is. I wouldn't lean toward anything in particular as of yet. Maybe another shot or two with the light from a few different angles?

If we are talking about the upper left hand corner of the primary "D", the outside should have serifs, if it does not; then it's probably the start of a filled "D", not an RPM...

It looks like a little machine doubling on the date, and the effect could also be on the mintmark... or just a terribly worn die that caused both anomalies. I have found many of the 68's with heavy and thick letters and numbers.
A nice picture and certainly is a nice looking color and condition on the coin.

I agree with all of you and it is most likely a causality of MD.
