I have two 1954-S that I need help with. I am new to this so I do not know the lingo yet. The first one has two extra pieces of copper, one from the 9 in 1959 to the "S" and the other from the 5 in 59 to the "S"...

The other is in much better condition and has an extra piece in the bottom loop of the 5 in 59. You cannot see it but the IBER in liberty is fuzzy like it is close to a double but not quite, each letter has streaks on either side.

Also, I used my scanner to get these pics and it will not bring up a lot of the errors in my other coins. What is the best way to get really good close ups that show the detail you need to bring up?
Thanks everyone, Anton.

On Page 329 of The Error Coin Encyclopedia the authors discuss these types of errors as DIE Cracks. This is where stresses build up in the Die used to stamp the coin and the Die cracks or a piece may even fall off the die. When this happens random raised areas are produced on the coin and you get BIE types and die crack errors. This is what looks like happened to this coin.

Hope that helps,

Jeff

It appears that both of the coins have the same type of error in different areas.
The Lincoln on the right is a mighty fine example of a 1954S, and is exhibiting a nice toning of the metal. Not everyone likes toning on a coin, but I think it adds character and have kept everyone I have found.

Thanks Jeff and Jean, it does help. For decades I just put coins away and only recently {now that I am unemployed} have I started looking closely at what I have.
I am new to all this and I have many Lincolns that are odd or different than the others. There is so much to learn and so many opinions, this is the best site I have found. Hope everyone will have a great new year, Anton
