Could these be trails or some other doubling?

Those are not trails, but rather a late die state coin showing deterioration

Okay, Bob is probably going to shoot me, but here goes.

When I first saw this die, I too thought that it was die deterioration. However, something struck me a bit odd. The flow lines from die deterioration are normally radial in direction and the lines on this die were not. So, what happened.

Please remember that this is purely supposition on my part. What we are looking at is a combination of trails and flow lines on the same die. What has happened is that since the trail lines are near the rim of the coin and in the same general direction of metal flow, the trail lines have been attenuated by that metal flow. This amounts to premature die deterioration and if you look, the only area that has the heavy flow lines is the area affected by trails. Even the smaller groves from the letters that are made by the die scraping across the hub have been attenuated by the metal flow.

If you will look at 1996P-1DEO-005T on the traildies.com site you will see a similar die, if not the same one. And this does not stop here either. Look at the following dies:

1995P-1DEO-004T
1997P-1DEO-003T
1998P-1DEO-010T
1998P-1DEO-012T
1998P-1DEO-013T

These are all similar dies and there maybe more that I have overlooked.

We are still in the learning stages of trail dies and one of the fascinating aspects of this variety type is its diversity. Trails can take on many different looks and this is just one of those different looks; trails intensified by metal flow.

Hope that this helps and if the die on traildies.com does not match what you have please consider sending the coin on down to me so that we can get it on the site.

Thanks,
BJ Neff

That is an interesting find and very interesting observations BJ. I do see how the die flow lines seem to change directions at the end of the motto.

More to to keep in mind while searching...

I have no problem with that assessment BJ. No shooting will be required...
The more I look at it, the more I see what you are talking about. To me though, I would love to see an early die state example of the trails die to do a comparison with one in this die state.

Hey Guy's I need a better camera, the Motic device or software I have on this Boreal Digital 1000 Microsope is inferior to say the least. The coin is in much better shape then what is presented. By the way I may have found a 94-D MD/DDO see new post when you get a chance.
