I've been keeping them, but not the '82s.
I've been keeping the ones I find in circulation. The Majority of BU rolls I have are pre 82. As far as the melting them one day..I don't think the mint or goverment will ever let them melt them down.

any way I can help...
I started to a few weeks ago but I quickly got too many, so I turned in about 1000 all at once. Now I just keep unc. 80s, au older, plus anything funny looking.
I look for varieties too but a lot of rpms and double dies are too tough for me to see.
I just hope for the obvious ones.

I agree. I know many Variety collectors just search BU rolls for RPMs. They photograph better the die stages are more easily defined. Like Lincoln Cents in general , BUs mid 30s on are plentiful. At least for now....
Wheat:
You're not saying BU 30s are plentiful in bank rolls are you?
If so, I need to go to your bank. I guess they're plentiful at shows and dealers.
My fun is in finding good ones from circulation. I get a charge when I upgrade even a common date in my book.

From banks .. No way.
However , BU Lincoln Cents (singles and rolls) from 1936 on are still readily available. For how long ?.. is any ones guess.
The prices have been slowly but steadily ++ increasing as of late on the Graysheet. If any one has a copy of the March 2008 Numismatic News insert price list, take a look at thoses MS65 LC prices from 1936-1958. Those prices may be a little extreme now but will be the norm in the not to distant future.
I find one or two wide AMs a month, (98 or 2K). I have been able to trade them for some older unc wheaties. Keeps me from having to spend my grandkids inheritance.
I rarely buy anything. Its more fun improving my penny set via searching and trading.
I suppose I should buy some pennies while they are still affordable.
The only ones I'm missing(besides varieties) are the ones I cant afford anyway

this forum is basically about varieties and errors with Lincoln pennies and i thought asked who hoarded pennies on here
here is forum about mostly hoarders - i thought it was interesting to find when they reach their limit(size & $) to collect pennies & nickels for the metal value

I do read that forum from time to time but I personally find the topic somewhat repetitive. Not to say that I don't save the copper ones because I do, it's just that once I decided to start doing that, there's not much more to say.
Wow!
I checked out that forum. Those guys are amazing to me. Do you really think it will be worthwhille in the long run to hoard the copper vs. putting your money in any other investment?

This is kinda funny how and what we all look for in ""COMMON" change, pocket change all gets put back into cerculation, I don't keep any of it... EXCEPT I do look through all 1985-1989 mintmarks Oh and the 83-P......

One coin that I key on saving in the Memorial series of the Lincoln cent is the small dated 1982. Seems that there are fewer of these around than previously thought. Where it is the 3.1 or the 2.5 gr., or the Denver mint or the Philadelphia mint, it now gets tubed.

Do you check all the '82 D sm date for weight? 3.1gram would be quite a find.

I am up to four strictly cu pre-1983, and one completely filled Zinc that are all AU/BU with little spotting. If you research how many of the memorials have been discovered to be varieties just in the last six months, it's a valid reason to keep all of the pre 1982. Especially, there are scads of 1983-on memorials that are doubled or some other variety or such. The chance you will find a BU in rolls ten years from now are slim and none. They degrade mightily. I keep every BU from 1983 on.

I still have eight 50 dollar bags of pennies left out in front of me. Searching pennies, that's where. I fashioned myself an attorney once, and the world was overwhelming. I thought me to be a singer, but the sound of a water buffalo has it over my voice. Then I thought I would play guitar, but got carpal tunnel IN BOTH WRISTS. Then, finally, I thought I could rescue the world, but the world is happy minding itself, thank you. So I search pennies and post here. That's all I aspire too, and it is so easy and uncomplicated, BROTHER LEMME TELL YA!
Some day I'll get a camera and then yaall can see my stuff :sign10:

Legend,
I am humbled by your career. Search your bag's. I know a few attorney's so your Cent searching is far from ending. :)

Hi:
I save all wheats and all 1968-1974's. I also save any AU-BU 1959 thru 1969-d's.
I got alot off them. Not sure why I save them - not the copper value.
Thx
Roger

With a one time exception, I have saved every cent that is not messed up so bad that you would not want to keep it near any other coin. The exception was when someone gave me several 2# coffee cans and one old canning jar full of coins. There were somewhere in the neighborhood of 15,000 cents total. There were only two wheat cents in the entire hoard. :) The rolls were turned into my bank and the proceeds were donated to our local Boys and Girls Club.
