What are the top 10 most commonly found errors/varieties that are found when looking through boxes of cents? I already pull all the wheats, 2009s, and I look for wAMs, I want to have a simple list of errors/varieties to look for that isn't too extensive such as the one at the top of this forum, but good enough that I won't miss any of the popular varieties.

To narrow down to such a small number I would have to say that the few listed in the Red Book would be a fair guide.
I have tried to understand just what the design is supposed to look like and if I find anything that differs from the normal design I set it aside and later reference the books and sites available in trying to attribute what I have found. Hope that helps..

One difficulty in making such a list is that many varieties have certain geographic regions they are very common in and regions they are rare in. For example, I've found at least 6 1971 DDO Die #1, in two years of searching in Maine, but others living in Florida have never found one in many more years.
So, if you don't want to memorize a long list to look at your best bet is as Steven says, get a sense of the design and set aside all those that are different.

There might be a top 50 that are likely, but as stated certain varieties can be regional. I don't think a top 10 would help. Just go through everything...

there is soo much to look for that 10 is just a drop in the bucket. it can be overwhelming. i statrted by researching 1 variety at a time and before long i was aware of many. the more i learned the easier it became to remember new ones, and i had a better idea of what to look for. i still try to research as many as possible and just keep learning. it can be a very rewarding hobby. best of luck!
