I came across a 2008 cent whose obverse was struck by dies that have been excessively polished in a small area. All detail has been worn away between the ear and beard leaving just a flat space in between them. The absence of details leads me to think that there may be some coins out there with an extra earlobe or other feature causing the mint the need to polish that area of the die so heavily. Maybe a nice die clash? Anyone care to comment or speculate? Has anyone else noticed any of these?
Very interesting find. I would hold on to that one.

Too late. I already listed it on eBay.
Thank's for the picture. First one I've seen. It does look like a keeper.

I've seen a fair number of these, but from 2002 and 2006 (which I check for other reasons). What I've seen looks like an extremely flat spot, but doesn't have die polishing lines, it's just almost like a mirrored surface, but it's right in the same spot as on yours.
I really don't have an explanation right now- you should post it to the conecaonline board and ask Mike Diamond about it. My gut feeling is that it has to do with how the die is hubbed- maybe incomplete hubbing?

I took your advice, it's on the CONECA forum.

Sorry, I should have followed-up sooner. Here is what they had to say about it:

I was going to bid on it, but it is already too rich for me. I can't wait to see what it will sell for.
I did bid on it. It's way past my limit now. Nice coin Car.

I can't wait to see what it will sell for.
It went for $21.50.
I just listed a second one that I found. This one is not quite as nice as the other one though. It has a couple spots on the obverse.

I have found two of these myself. I took them to a local dealer and he didn't seem interested in them but I'm hanging on to them for now.

Greetings.
This type of polishing has been around since at least 2000, as I have a roll of 2000 P cents with this feature, as well as a polished inner ear, removing the details completely. I also found it in the eye and ear portion of a Sacagawea dollar, circulated, and it was beautifully shiny, like a proof.
Additionally, there a re planchets of many years, including 2000, with stripes polished across them, and I have some from 2000 Wide AM cents, making it a very lovely oddity to collect. You can tell it was meant to be there, as the design runs into the rim of the penny, as well as into the top of the memorial. I have less than 100, so they are tough, as I am a penny slave.

I'm pretty much a newby, so I hope one day my comments will be worth something to someone. But I did get two BU OBW rolls from an EBAY member with this polished ear detail, and they were 2000 Lincolns.

Greetings.
Yep, I collect year 2000, so long as the pricing does not drive me off. An EBAY seller had one of these for sale, and so I asked if he had a roll. He said yes, and so I asked for two, and he said Okay. True story, I got two rolls of these from one seller who MUST have found these in a bag of $50.00 worth. That's how it usually happens in multiples. I'll share, sir, but the rolls went into a five gallon jar of copper lincolns which is full. I put the rolls in there when it was 3/4 full. Once I make copper lincoln rolls from that jar...
