Came across this one today while roll searching.

Your thoughts?

edited to add: I e-mailed Wexler about this coin and he suggested that the remnants seen is from the digit "8" of the date. I did another overlay with an "8" digit.

So a new DDO???

Maybe just a gouge?

Very interesting. But how could a 3 overlay an 8 if the 1988 was minted long after the 1983 coin? Just a thought. The possibilities of this occurring seem endless.

IMHO I would put it in the maybe section and wait to see if an other example turned up with another defined point that could be either matched to a 3 or a 8. As of now it could easily be a gouge as well as a DDO...

Wexler has requested to examine the coin and will await his analysis.

John Wexler informed me today he has completed his examination and analysis and that he is, "listing the 1983-D cent as 1983-D 1c WDDO-003 (Class IV + VIII) with the top of an extra 8 in the top of the 3."
