Just curious, how long do you guys take to examine a coin for errors or varieties? (I know you probably take an hour or so Pat, LOL). Also, do you have a guide with pictures of the year and varieties for that year which you compare your coins to while you're searching? Or do some of you just blow through the coins quickly, basically just looking for the major or most popular varieties for that year? It seems like you, Pat, take a good long time to examine each coin because you find things that I think most people wouldn't even think to look at or even notice. I guess it's a lot more fun when you have one of those scopes that you have! BTW, do you send you're pics to CONECA for information?

I actually don't very long.. I sort through new and look for obvious differences.. After looking at so many certain ones stand out.. Then they go into a unsorted box.. Later knowing I checked for obvious I sort them all by year, then by MM and then finally I'll go through in detail looking for differences.

Dave , do you have a copy of The Cherrypicker's Guide? This is a must for searching. I'm told they are working on the fifth edition right now. You can pick up the forth edition now. Volume one covers cents.

You know like the Cherrypickers guide says, if you can't see the error with a 7x loupe than it's probably not worth much.

When searching I will, as Pat stated, search for the obvious then sort by mint and date. Then take a closer look. I will have as many references as I can concerning the denomination of coins being searched. When searching the same demonination, year and mint even some minor differences will stand out after searching a few and getting your eye used to what should be there and what should not. Even with what I think is a thorough search I end up going back through rolls and finding missed varieties. I think a good lessen I am learning is find a number of coins or rolls to search then step away from it for a while.

I've put through the microscope about 20lbs of cents as of today and started over a week ago.. I was going to sort all of them my Year and MM but now once I've searched them I'm just gonna roll them and either take em to the bank or put hoard them. :)
